Position Overview

This role is situated within the Office of Research and Development, specifically in the Center for Environmental Measurement and Modeling, focusing on Air Methods and Characterization.

About the Office of Research and Development (ORD)

This is an office-based role, requiring regular attendance at the designated duty station.

Key Responsibilities

In this position, you will:
  • Design, implement, and evaluate experiments as part of various research teams contributing to broader research initiatives.
  • Adapt, validate, and utilize methodologies to evaluate experimental outcomes.
  • Offer technical support, training, and expert guidance.
  • Ensure compliance with Laboratory, Health and Safety, and Quality Assurance protocols.
  • Act as a Contracting Officer's Representative, Project Officer, or similar role for external contracts and agreements supporting ORD research.

You will dedicate less than 25% of your work time to contracts, grants, cooperative agreements, and/or interagency agreements.

As you progress in your career, you may be eligible for promotions to more complex roles, contingent upon meeting all eligibility and qualification criteria.

This role necessitates the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and is classified as Moderate Risk, requiring a background investigation.

Qualifications

Note: All qualification requirements, including those specified in the Education section, must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

To qualify for the Research GS-11 level, you must possess one of the following:
  • 1 year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level, defined as assisting with the operation, calibration, and maintenance of field and laboratory instruments; analyzing experimental results; and preparing scientific documentation;
  • A master's or equivalent graduate degree in a directly related field;
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
To qualify for the Research GS-12 level, you must have one of the following:
  • 1 year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level, defined as operating, calibrating, and maintaining field and laboratory instruments; conducting scientific measurements and interpreting data; and assisting in the design and execution of field studies;
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field;
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Your application will be assessed based on your competencies in the following areas:
  • Knowledge of field and laboratory instrumentation measuring the physical and chemical properties of toxic substances.
  • Ability to operate, calibrate, and maintain field and laboratory instruments.
  • Skill in interpreting scientific data.
  • Knowledge of environmental collection and sampling techniques for air, liquid, aerosol, and solid samples.
  • Skill in written communication.
  • Ability to design and implement field studies.
  • Ability to manage contracts, including preparing procurement requests and monitoring technical performance.
Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles through National Service programs and other organizations.

Education

A bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited institution in physical science, engineering, or mathematics is required, including 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering disciplines.
