At Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital, the Nuclear Medicine Specialist I role involves executing a range of standard nuclear medicine procedures of moderate complexity utilizing radioactive materials.

This position provides direct support to physicians during all diagnostic and specialized nuclear medicine procedures.

The Nuclear Medicine Specialist I is dedicated to delivering outstanding patient care while adhering to radiation safety standards and regulations set by governing bodies to ensure optimal patient safety and service quality.

This role is integral to the direct patient care team.

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Fosters a positive workplace atmosphere and contributes to a collaborative, team-oriented environment that actively supports one another in achieving departmental objectives. Engages with all members of the patient care team by effectively communicating and reporting relevant patient care information and data comprehensively.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts nuclear medicine procedures, a branch of radiology that employs radioactive substances.
  • Proactively evaluates, identifies, and addresses patient needs for adjustments or interventions to enhance patient care, image quality, and overall patient experience.

This includes:
positioning, physiological assessment, procedure preparation, and technical adjustments. Modifies technical parameters to achieve desired imaging outcomes and recognizes complications and limitations associated with specific procedures.

  • Assists physicians during diagnostic or therapeutic interventions, including maintaining sterile techniques.
  • Provides clear explanations and instructions to patients and their families at an appropriate comprehension level using both verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Adheres to safety protocols and executes all imaging procedures accordingly. Implements ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principles to safeguard patients, staff, and the public, while complying with radiation safety standards. Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures, regularly practices aseptic methods, and ensures adherence to radiation safety and infection control protocols. Complies with departmental and hospital safety standards, practices, and policies.
  • Reports 'near misses' and documents errors promptly in the appropriate hospital patient safety reporting system to enhance processes and identify trends. Contributes to the identification of corrective actions and improvement initiatives, and aids in meeting departmental and hospital quality and safety targets.
  • Conducts daily imaging equipment quality control (QC) checks to ensure all imaging devices are in safe working condition prior to use. Reports any equipment malfunctions to management and routinely performs preventive maintenance; requests service as necessary.
  • Employs critical thinking skills to observe and proactively address patient reactions (e.g., to medications) or potential outcomes, seeking assistance as needed.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensures accurate and complete documentation of patient procedures. Inputs charges at the time services are rendered.
  • Utilizes resources efficiently; avoids waste of supplies. Demonstrates self-motivation to manage time effectively and prioritize daily responsibilities.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Engages in departmental projects or shared governance activities. Takes responsibility for personal growth and development by participating in in-service training and continuing education opportunities.
  • Seeks opportunities to expand knowledge beyond baseline competencies with a focus on ongoing development as a technologist.

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of an educational program accredited by the credentialing body for the required certifications indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations section.

  • ARRT-N - Radiologic Technologist - Nuclear Medicine Tech (ARRT) OR
  • CNMT - Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMTCB) AND
  • CMRT - Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist - State Licensure Registration as a Medical Radiologic Technologist (MRT-GC) through the Texas Medical Board OR
  • CMRT-Temp - Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist - Temporary State Licensure AND
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as determined through ongoing skills assessments and performance evaluations.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, particularly regarding activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
