Position Overview:

The Adventure Program Coordinator is a full-time role that reports to the Education and Program Directors, tasked with the design, organization, and execution of all facets of Move United's programming. Some activities may occur during weekends and evenings.

Required Skills:

Proven experience and comfort in engaging with individuals with diverse cognitive and physical challenges.

Technical proficiency necessary to ensure safety across all program types.

Experience in program facilitation to tailor activities to meet both individual and group objectives.

Familiarity with the workings of Special Education systems and social service organizations, as much of the programming involves collaboration with schools and group homes, necessitating sensitivity to the needs of teachers, students, parents, and staff.

Desired Attributes:

An effective Program Coordinator will be deeply passionate about the mission of Move United, believing in the transformative power of adventure experiences to foster positive change. They should possess an engaging personality and a commitment to building and nurturing relationships, which is central to our mission. Ideal candidates will be approachable, reliable, adaptable, open to feedback, and possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal. They should be capable of seeking clarification and assistance from colleagues to ensure optimal outcomes. When interacting with participants, they should balance patience with high expectations, encouraging individuals to step outside their comfort zones while knowing when to provide support.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Program Leadership: Develop program lessons and itineraries aligned with participant goals.
  2. Serve as the lead facilitator for trips, collaborating with other staff or independently as needed.
  3. Execute all technical aspects of programming as outlined in the Program Manual.
  4. Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures.
  5. Enhance program effectiveness through innovative adaptive accommodations for individuals with disabilities.

Program Coordination:

  1. Manage logistics for program sites and groups prior to each event.
  2. Oversee the program closure process after each event.
  3. Express appreciation to site hosts, group contacts, volunteers, and participants meaningfully.
  4. Represent Move United at various community events, fairs, or conferences that promote opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Experience and Education:

A minimum of three years in outdoor adventure, experiential learning, special education, or related fields (or a comparable combination of education and experience).

Experience in leading groups or projects is preferred.

Familiarity with leading cycling or canoeing programs and working with individuals with spinal cord injuries is advantageous.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other productivity applications.

A bachelor's or associate degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Certification Requirements:

The Program Coordinator should possess or be willing to obtain Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification shortly after starting the position. Additional desirable certifications include teaching credentials, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, or outdoor certifications.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Ability to engage in moderate to vigorous physical activities such as hiking, swimming, rock climbing, kayaking, and backpacking.

Capability to lift and carry at least 30-40 pounds.

Ability to work at a desk or computer for a significant portion of the workweek.

Compensation:

A stipend for equipment necessary for programming is also provided.
