Position Overview:

The Legal Conflicts Analyst conducts thorough due diligence investigations and utilizes the conflicts database to assess and report findings related to all entities associated with prospective and current clients. This role is essential in aiding the department's risk management efforts by identifying and reporting legal and business conflicts of interest, thereby safeguarding the firm against potential malpractice claims and disqualification motions. The analyst also assists the firm in adhering to the Rules of Professional Conduct and relevant federal regulations concerning "know your client" requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts comprehensive due diligence investigations of potential new clients or partners for the firm and its attorneys, employing various electronic resources. This may involve quick or complex research, including news articles, public records, bankruptcy filings, judgments, liens, litigation history, corporate structures, and individual profiles.
  • Prepares, under general supervision, a detailed summary report of due diligence findings, emphasizing any potential risk factors. Communicates findings to relevant firm stakeholders, including the Senior Ethics & Conflicts Attorney or screening attorney.
  • Responsible for generating conflict reports based on names submitted through various requests; identifies potential legal and business conflicts using specialized conflicts software. Evaluates search results for relevance and prepares conflict reports accordingly, advising screening or clearance attorneys on significant findings.
  • Conducts corporate structure research to analyze business entities and reveal client relationships relevant to conflict reports; utilizes online resources and databases such as Lexis Diligence, Lexis Corporate Affiliations, Lexis Public Records, Capital IQ, and various government websites.
  • Gains knowledge in processing rejected matters and filing related documentation; learns to link parties and manage additional tasks as required.
  • Assists with deactivating matters and updating records for new hires.
  • Responds to departmental communications as necessary, under general supervision, and trains for late shift responsibilities.
  • Adheres to all firm and departmental policies regarding conflict searches, due diligence investigations, and new business intake.
  • Handles sensitive and confidential information with care.
  • Participates in special projects and additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with four years of relevant law firm or research experience, or a Paralegal Certificate with two years of relevant experience required.
  • Prior experience as a Conflicts Researcher in a similar firm or other legal experience is advantageous.
  • Juris Doctorate, librarian, paralegal, or data analytics background is a plus.
  • Proficient in using personal computers, database software, Windows, and Word; experience with Aderant Expert and/or Intapp is beneficial.
  • Ability to follow instructions, apply sound judgment, think independently, and seek guidance when necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with personnel at all levels within the firm.
  • Excellent organizational skills to prioritize and manage detailed and repetitive tasks, while assessing and recommending improved procedures.
  • Highly analytical with strong database searching skills and attention to detail preferred.
  • Good spelling, writing, and proofreading abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, and maintain composure with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed to meet departmental deadlines.

Work Environment:

This position operates in a professional office setting, primarily involving sedentary work that requires prolonged sitting or standing. Occasional off-hour meetings and events may be necessary, along with potential travel.

Schedule:

This role currently supports a hybrid work schedule, typically requiring in-office attendance two days per week and remote work three days per week. Additional in-office days may be necessary based on business needs and specific task demands. The hybrid structure is subject to change.
