About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team at the Applied Research Laboratory at the Penn State University. As a key member of our Engineering Systems Research and Development Division, you will be responsible for designing, analyzing, building, and testing hardware for undersea applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze requirements, identify problems, and develop innovative solution concepts to meet the needs of our clients.

  • Design and develop complex mechanical systems, structures, and mechanisms, and ensure they meet the required specifications and standards.

  • Work closely with our drafting team to create and approve detailed drawings and designs.

  • Develop and implement assembly and test procedures to ensure the quality and reliability of our products.

  • Collaborate with our technicians to perform assembly and testing of systems and subsystems, and provide technical guidance and support as needed.

  • Support field testing and provide technical expertise to ensure the successful deployment of our products.

  • Plan and execute technical tasks of a larger scope, and lead specific tasks within the project scope to ensure timely completion and high-quality results.

  • Manage small to moderate-sized projects, and plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of the work to ensure successful project delivery.

Additional Responsibilities for Higher-Level Positions
  • Design and develop complex machined components and subsystems, and ensure they meet the required specifications and standards.

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and technicians to ensure their professional growth and development.

  • Take on additional responsibilities, including project management and leadership, to support the growth and success of our team.

Requirements
  • 3D CAD design and engineering drawing development skills, preferably using Siemens NX.

  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, and apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T ANSI Y14.5) principles.

  • Proficiency in completing free body diagrams, and using hand calculations to calculate forces and resultant stresses on structures.

  • Packaging of complex electromechanical assemblies, and development of test plans and procedures.

  • Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills, and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Structural or thermal finite element analysis skills, and experience with simulation software.

  • A degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, and relevant industry experience.
