We are currently seeking a Chief Veterinary Officer to collaborate with the U.S. Geological Survey's Southwest Biological Science Center (SBSC) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). This role is designed to be fully remote, with occasional travel required.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe selected candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with the Animal Welfare Act Regulations (AWAR) and the Ecosystems Mission Area Animal Care and Use Policy. The responsibilities include:
- Developing and documenting a comprehensive veterinary care program, ensuring approval from the SBSC's Institutional Officer (IO) for instances when continuous coverage is not feasible.
- Providing expert veterinary consultation to the IACUC regarding pain management and humane treatment of animal subjects.
- Overseeing significant surgical procedures related to veterinary conditions.
- Exercising full authority to treat or humanely euthanize animals as necessary, irrespective of ongoing research activities.
- Offering guidance and training to scientific and support staff on humane handling and care of research animals.
- Consulting with principal investigators to determine optimal treatment options for sick animals.
- Participating as a voting member of the IACUC, contributing to the oversight of animal care protocols.
- Providing professional insights during investigations of adverse events and compliance issues.
- Maintaining professional integrity by addressing potential conflicts of interest appropriately.
- Assisting in protocol reviews and delegating responsibilities when necessary.
The primary objective is to assist in the establishment of the SBSC's IACUC by drafting a veterinary care program that supports required protocol reviews. Additionally, the candidate will review animal care protocols during scheduled meetings and prepare comprehensive reports with recommendations for compliance.
Qualifications- Valid Veterinary License
- Experience in aquatic animal care
