Key Responsibilities

  • Delivers tailored vision services through individualized sessions and group settings, adapting to the specific requirements of each student.
  • Gathers essential data via family interviews, observations during other therapeutic interventions, and by conducting annual Functional Vision Learning Media Assessments (FVLMA) to determine necessary adaptations for students' visual needs.
  • Establishes individualized goals for each student, closely monitors their progress, maintains comprehensive student records, and prepares necessary reports including FVLMA, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and quarterly progress updates.
  • Engages in IEP meetings, collaborates in team discussions, and participates in parent-teacher and Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings, including legal hearings when required.
  • Meticulously plans educational lessons and organizes materials ahead of time, while consistently assessing and adjusting to students' evolving needs.
  • Works collaboratively with classroom teachers and related service providers, coordinating with the iHOPE Assistive Technology Team to ensure a holistic educational strategy is implemented for each student.
  • Exhibits adaptability in scheduling and lesson planning, creating customized materials such as adapted books, brailled resources, and tangible symbols as necessary.
  • Maintains open communication with parents and external professionals, ensuring that all parties are informed and involved in the student's educational journey.
  • Provides consultation services on vision education to staff members as required.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development opportunities both within iHOPE and externally.
  • Adheres to established department and school policies and procedures.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
For Experienced Teachers of the Visually Impaired:
  • May oversee or assist fellow educators with complex cases, coordinating meetings and resources to support student needs, including assistive technology.
  • Collaborates with external organizations in the field of Vision Education to explore new programs, technologies, and educational materials.
  • Assists in managing daily departmental operations in the absence of the Director, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Acts as a mentor and role model for colleagues, providing guidance and support to Vision Specialists, graduate students, and interns.
  • Organizes professional development sessions for vision staff and contributes to departmental events.
  • Meets regularly with the Director to discuss departmental initiatives and provide constructive feedback for service improvements.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Current certification as a Teacher of the Blind and Visually Impaired from the New York State Education Department.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with a keen attention to detail, capable of managing multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain focus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly in creating adapted educational materials.
  • Engages in professional development to maintain state licensure.
  • Demonstrates advanced skills in assessment and individualized lesson planning.
  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of Cortical Vision Impairment, including relevant assessment frameworks.
Additional Requirements for Senior Teacher Position:
  • A minimum of two years of experience in Visual Impairment and Severe Disabilities, with expertise in Cortical Visual Impairment.
  • Strong writing and communication skills, capable of reviewing documentation and facilitating training.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least one year of direct experience in Visual Impairment and Severe Disabilities.
  • Prior experience with Cortical Visual Impairment.
Compensation Range: $69,000-$75,500 annually
