Job Overview

Under the guidance of the Executive Director of Comparative Medicine, the Manager of Comparative Medicine Operations is tasked with overseeing all facets of Comparative Medicine Operations, including logistics and equipment management, while supervising the operations team. This role involves managing personnel training, delegating work assignments, coordinating technical activities for staff, and providing operational insights to the Executive Director. The Manager is also responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), operational documentation, and equipment upkeep.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervises daily activities of operations staff, including recruitment, onboarding, training, work assignments, approval of time off, performance assessments, employee development plans, and disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Designs, implements, and maintains a comprehensive training program for operations personnel, ensuring all safety training and records are current.
  • Establishes and upholds compliance protocols that align with institutional, federal, state, and local regulations concerning cage sanitation and other vivarium support functions, focusing on personnel safety, waste management, equipment operation, and procurement of supplies.
  • Creates, reviews, updates, and maintains essential documentation, including SOPs, operational guidelines, safety protocols, equipment instructions, maintenance logs, quality assurance forms, and chemical inventories.
  • Conducts inspections, operations, and troubleshooting of equipment and systems, including but not limited to tunnel washers, autoclaves, and decontamination systems.
  • Oversees the Quality Assurance program for sterilization equipment, ensuring proper testing and documentation.
  • Collaborates with Facilities Management and Research Operations to identify and address maintenance needs, working closely with vendors for service and repairs.
  • Maintains compliance of vivarium loading docks and coordinates the transport of supplies between facilities.
  • Manages inventory of Comparative Medicine equipment and supplies, including tracking, storage, and disposal of items.
  • Oversees the management of chemicals, including ordering, inventory, handling, and training of personnel in compliance with safety standards.
  • Leads the institutional sanitization verification program, developing documentation and training personnel on testing systems and result interpretation.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of department-owned vehicles, ensuring maintenance and compliance with regulations.
  • Provides recommendations to the Executive Director for infrastructure improvements and collaborates with various departments to enhance operational efficiency.
Qualifications

Educational Background:

High School Diploma/GED required; Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.

Licenses:

Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification required upon hire or within 90 days; Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification required upon hire or within one year; valid California Driver's License required.

Experience:

A minimum of 5 years in laboratory animal science, cage washing, and vivarium logistics; at least 2 years in a leadership role within an AAALAC accredited facility.

Physical Requirements:

Able to perform moderate lifting, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods, and read documents both in print and online.
