Job Overview
GENERAL PURPOSE
The primary role is to execute the essential duties and responsibilities of a municipal law enforcement officer. This includes patrolling the community, enforcing regulations, and responding to service requests. The officer will conduct inquiries into reported criminal activities and observed offenses, while also promoting road safety. Participation in necessary training and recruitment of new personnel is also a key aspect of the role.

NOTE: A $15,000 sign-on incentive is available for licensed Peace Officers. Candidates with prior law enforcement experience may qualify for a higher starting salary. This position is designed to prepare and train candidates for police officer roles. It involves participation in training programs, including classroom learning and practical training in fundamental police procedures, techniques, and laws.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
To qualify as a Texas Peace Officer, individuals not already licensed must complete a recruit-training course at the police academy. This comprehensive program includes both classroom and field instruction covering essential police procedures, techniques, and laws.
For licensed Texas peace officers, participation in the recruit-training course may be necessary, depending on their experience level.
Upon successful completion of the police academy training, the field training process begins. As a newly commissioned officer, the individual will receive on-the-job training and gain valuable experience under the guidance of an experienced training officer.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage in training as part of a two-person team in patrol techniques using a marked police vehicle, assisting experienced officers in responding to service calls.
- Demonstrate proficiency in these techniques as a solo officer, coordinating backup when necessary.
- Receive training in basic investigations, making arrests, conducting searches, and seizing evidence.
- Respond to a variety of service calls requiring police intervention, including but not limited to burglary, theft, homicide, sexual assault, welfare checks, and domestic disputes.
- Train in traffic law enforcement, crash investigation, and reporting, issuing citations and occasionally arresting traffic violators while promoting transportation safety in accordance with state and local laws.
- Perform all essential job functions and tasks as required by assignment, under the supervision of a Field Training Instructor or supervisor.
- Exhibit the ability to independently carry out all essential job functions and tasks of a police officer.
- Maintain physical capabilities necessary for the role, including the ability to walk, run, jump, climb, and use self-defense techniques.
- Participate as a member of various employee committees.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
- Must meet applicable Civil Service Requirements.
- Must successfully complete the entry-level police examination.
- Must maintain a minimum uncorrected vision of 20/100 in each eye, corrected to 20/20, with normal color vision.
- Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.
- Must successfully meet the department's physical readiness standards.
- Must meet all licensing requirements of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
- Must be of good moral character.
- Must complete a thorough background investigation and interview process prior to appointment.
