Job Overview

Position: Government Relations Manager

Reporting to: Vice President, Government Relations


Role Summary:

The Government Relations Manager plays a pivotal role in supporting the public policy initiatives of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. This position involves acting as a lobbyist for the organization and contributing to the development and promotion of the Chamber's public policy objectives. The ideal candidate will be a proactive team member with robust organizational and analytical skills, adept at monitoring and interpreting legislation, prioritizing policy issues for the Chamber's focus, and identifying new legislative trends.

Effective communication is essential, as the manager must convey policy positions clearly and concisely to various stakeholders, including Chamber colleagues, legislative personnel, and members. Tailoring communication to meet the specific needs and priorities of each audience is crucial.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and report on relevant legislative developments, providing timely updates to the policy team during regular meetings.
  • Prepare concise written summaries of pertinent legislation, analyzing its implications for Chamber members, and share insights as directed by the Vice President of Government Relations.
  • Gain comprehensive knowledge of the Chamber's policy agenda by reviewing internal communications, attending meetings, and engaging with leadership.
  • Serve as the Chamber's liaison with legislative staff and officials to further the Chamber's objectives, leveraging existing relationships and establishing new connections.
  • Assist in drafting written testimonies and preparing scripts for oral presentations on legislative matters to articulate the Chamber's advocacy stance.
  • Oversee the Chamber's lobbying filings, ensuring accuracy and timely submission of reports while maintaining records of all submissions.
  • Support at least two leadership councils by managing member rosters, organizing meetings, and coordinating speaker engagements.
  • Perform additional administrative tasks and special projects as required.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience of 3 to 4 years is required, with prior experience in government settings being advantageous.
  • Proven organizational skills and sound judgment demonstrated in previous roles.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in engaging senior management.
  • Exceptional writing and verbal communication abilities, with a focus on audience-specific messaging.
  • A collaborative mindset with a willingness to learn from peers and maintain high performance in team interactions.
  • Registration as a lobbyist with state and city authorities is mandatory.
  • Effective presentation and public speaking skills for various meetings and events.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Strong ethical standards and professional values.

Compensation: Starting salary is $60,000.
