Position: Government Relations Manager

Reports to: Vice President, Government Relations


Role Summary:

The Government Relations Manager will play a pivotal role in supporting the public policy initiatives of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. This position involves acting as a representative for the organization and aiding in the formulation and advocacy of the Chamber's public policy objectives. The ideal candidate will be a proactive team member with exceptional organizational and analytical skills, capable of monitoring and evaluating legislative developments, prioritizing policy issues for the Chamber's focus, and recognizing new legislative trends.

It is essential for the manager to effectively articulate and convey policy stances both in writing and verbally to key stakeholders, including Chamber staff, legislative personnel, and members. Communication must be tailored to meet the specific needs and priorities of each audience.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and assess pertinent legislation, providing timely updates on legislative status changes to the policy team during regular meetings.
  • Prepare written summaries for colleagues that outline significant legislative developments and evaluate their implications for Chamber members. Distribute these analyses as needed, prioritizing based on the Vice President of Government Relations' directives.
  • Acquire comprehensive knowledge of the Chamber's policy agenda and priorities through engagement with various communication channels, including press releases and internal meetings.
  • Serve as the Chamber's liaison with legislative staff and officials to promote the Chamber's agenda. This includes leveraging existing relationships and cultivating new connections to proactively engage with elected officials' staff.
  • Assist in drafting written testimonies and preparing scripts for oral presentations by Chamber leadership regarding legislative matters, articulating the Chamber's advocacy positions and their effects on membership.
  • Oversee the Chamber's lobbying compliance, including annual, semi-annual, and quarterly filings. Ensure accuracy in tracking lobbying activities and verify details with relevant staff before submission.
  • Support at least two of the Chamber's leadership councils by managing member rosters, organizing meetings, and coordinating speaker engagements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including administrative tasks and special projects.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree or 3 to 4 years of relevant experience is required. Experience in governmental roles at any level is highly desirable.
  • Proven organizational skills and sound judgment demonstrated through prior work or educational experiences.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with experience in engaging with senior management.
  • Exceptional writing and verbal communication abilities, with a focus on tailoring messages to specific audiences.
  • A collaborative mindset with a willingness to learn from colleagues and maintain high performance in professional interactions.
  • Registration as a lobbyist with state and city authorities is required.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills for various meetings and events.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Commitment to ethical business practices and values.

Compensation: Starting salary is $60,000.
