Animal Care Technician

Key Responsibilities of an Animal Care Technician:
· The Animal Care Technician (ACT) will perform essential animal husbandry tasks, which may involve a variety of species including but not limited to nonhuman primates, canines, swine, rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents, and aquatic animals. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate records of health indicators, waste output, dietary intake, and environmental conditions.
· Administer clinical injections and conduct tuberculin testing as instructed by supervisory personnel.
· Facilitate physical activity and provide environmental enrichment for diverse species.
· Assist in training and demonstrating proper procedures to new staff and trainees as needed.
· Adhere to established laboratory protocols and maintain cleanliness in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures, as well as health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Qualifications for the Animal Care Technician Role:
· Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and hold AALAS certification at the ALAT level or higher.
· The role requires moderate physical exertion, including potential heavy lifting.
· Prior to placement in Veterinary Sciences, medical screening is necessary to assess any history of allergies, asthma, or physical conditions that may pose risks in this environment, as well as to check for zoonotic diseases such as Tuberculosis.
· The position involves regular exposure to biohazards and challenging conditions, including odors, temperature variations, noise, animal waste, and potential contact with hazardous test substances.
