SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: This role focuses on delivering various forms of support to assist children in alleviating the stress associated with health issues and/or hospitalization. The aim is to enhance understanding and coping mechanisms while promoting typical growth and development. This includes facilitating effective coping strategies through play, self-expression activities, creative arts, music therapies, and age-appropriate medical education and preparation.

SCOPE: The primary objective is to address the psychosocial needs of patients and their families by providing education, preparation, procedural support, and play within the Division of Child Life and Integrative Care at a dedicated Medical Center for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.

REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Care:
Conduct psychosocial evaluations of patients and families to identify strengths, concerns, and needs, setting both short-term and long-term objectives. Encourage family participation and support patients and families in adapting to injuries, diagnoses, chronic illnesses, or disabilities. Advocate for the needs of patients and families within the healthcare system and community. Assess the effectiveness of child life interventions and modify strategies based on outcomes. Report any suspicions of abuse and neglect as required. Implement tailored intervention strategies to achieve set goals, reviewing and adjusting these goals as necessary. Conduct post-procedural assessments and promote effective pain management. Maintain documentation of services and interventions provided. Participate in patient care conferences and follow up on referrals promptly.

Professional Responsibility:
Engage in process improvement initiatives and seek opportunities for involvement in evidence-based care and professional inquiry, maintaining a designated level of knowledge. Actively contribute to the advancement of professional standards within the division, hospital, and community. Mentor and supervise volunteers, and assist in the education and training of students and other professionals. Share knowledge with colleagues and remain current in the field through continuing education, integrating new skills and knowledge into practice.

Departmental Responsibility:
Submit supply requests in accordance with departmental protocols. Ensure workspaces are organized, safe, and professional for employees, patients, and families. Identify potential issues, address barriers, and take ownership of problems, demonstrating accountability. Manage time and priorities effectively to maintain a consistent and acceptable workload. Complete special projects while managing regular duties and strive to enhance personal productivity through the implementation of new work procedures. Contribute positively to the work environment.

Data Management:
Complete necessary daily and weekly documentation exchanges in line with division guidelines to ensure quality patient care and staff productivity.

Teamwork:
Participate actively in multidisciplinary team processes, engaging in effective problem-solving, collaborative learning, and the pursuit of best practices. Address conflicts directly and constructively, fostering an atmosphere of cooperation, respect, and trust within the team. Be responsive to the daily needs of colleagues and the division.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
  • 0 - 2 years of experience in a related job discipline
  • Completion of a child life internship under the supervision of a certified Child Life Specialist
  • Certification as a Child Life Specialist (CCLS) within one year of hire
