SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: This role involves delivering various forms of support to assist children in alleviating the stress associated with health challenges and hospital stays. The aim is to enhance understanding and coping mechanisms while promoting normal growth and development. This includes fostering effective coping strategies through play, creative expression, art and music therapies, and age-appropriate medical education.
SCOPE: The primary objective is to address the psychosocial needs of patients and their families by providing education, preparation, procedural support, and play activities within the Division of Child Life and Integrative Care at a medical facility dedicated to the care of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Care:
Conduct psychosocial evaluations of patients and their families to identify strengths, concerns, and needs, facilitating the establishment of both short-term and long-term goals. Encourage family involvement and support patients and families in adapting to injuries, diagnoses, chronic illnesses, or disabilities. Advocate for the needs of patients and families within the healthcare system and community. Assess the effectiveness of child life interventions and modify strategies based on outcomes. Report any suspicions of abuse or neglect as required. Implement tailored intervention strategies to achieve individual goals and conduct follow-up assessments post-procedure. Promote effective pain management and document all services and interventions provided. Participate in patient care conferences and follow up on referrals promptly.
Professional Responsibility:
Engage in process improvement initiatives and seek opportunities for involvement in evidence-based practices. Contribute to the advancement of professional standards within the division and the broader community. Mentor and supervise volunteers, and participate in the education and training of students and other professionals. Stay current in the field through continuing education and integrate new knowledge into practice.
Departmental Responsibility:
Submit supply requests in accordance with departmental protocols. Maintain organized, safe, and professional work areas for employees, patients, and families. Identify potential issues, address barriers, and take ownership of problems, demonstrating accountability. Manage time and priorities effectively to ensure a consistent and acceptable workload. Complete special projects while maintaining regular workflow and strive to enhance personal productivity through improved work procedures. Contribute positively to the work environment.
Data Management:
Ensure timely completion of required documentation and information exchange according to division guidelines to support quality patient care and staff productivity.
Teamwork:
Actively participate in multidisciplinary team processes, engaging in effective problem-solving and collaborative learning. Address conflicts directly and constructively, fostering an atmosphere of cooperation and respect within the team. Be responsive to the daily needs of colleagues and the division.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
- 0 - 2 years of experience in a related role
- Completion of a child life internship under the supervision of a certified Child Life Specialist
- Certification as a Child Life Specialist (CCLS) within one year of hire
