The Chief Veterinary Officer will oversee the daily operations of comprehensive shelter medicine and public health programs. We are looking for a leader who can provide compassionate guidance to our veterinary team. Our organization prides itself on delivering top-tier care and services to all animals and their human companions. Our vision is to enhance and support the lives of pets and people in our community while ensuring a positive and family-friendly shelter experience.

Our clinic is a newly constructed facility designed to provide state-of-the-art medical services. We aim to deliver high-quality veterinary care through a full spectrum of services, including wellness, preventive care, general medicine, dentistry, and surgical procedures. The hospital will be equipped with advanced diagnostic tools, including digital and dental radiography, digital ultrasound, and laser therapy. We believe in leveraging our team's strengths and interests by providing additional diagnostic equipment based on their preferences.

As we expand our team and develop our new facility, we envision the Chief Veterinary Officer playing a pivotal role in assembling their ideal veterinary staff and support team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Exemplify leadership, teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication.
  • Develop and implement medical protocols and guidelines for the care of shelter animals.
  • Adhere to and promote all standard operating procedures (SOPs) and contribute to their ongoing development.
  • Guide and consult the veterinary team on medical treatment plans for animals in our care and those utilizing the public wellness clinic.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with external veterinary professionals for after-hours care and support for foster caregivers.
  • Participate in executive leadership and decision-making processes, recognizing that shelter medicine impacts all facets of shelter operations.
  • Collaborate with the executive team to formulate the organization's budget and regularly monitor progress toward established goals.
  • Work alongside professional consultants to define and expand our public community animal care clinic's future scope of work.
  • Provide mentorship and training to veterinary externs once a robust medical team is in place.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with staff through daily interactions, scheduled meetings, and routine medical rounds.
  • Lead by example to foster positive working relationships through teamwork and collaboration, projecting a calm, professional demeanor and a positive attitude.
  • Strive to minimize the length of stay (LOS) for shelter animals while maintaining an adoption-driven capacity for care.
  • Deliver high-quality veterinary medical and surgical care in accordance with ASV guidelines.
  • Perform spay/neuter surgeries, including pediatric sterilizations, and additional surgical procedures as required, such as dentistry with dental radiography, enucleations, exploratory laparotomies, and tumor removals.
  • Consult and collaborate with specialty veterinary partners on complex cases.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal laws, regulations, and accepted standards concerning veterinary operations, drug control, and high-quality veterinary medicine.
  • Contribute to the monitoring, protection, and enhancement of the physical and behavioral health of shelter animals, both individually and collectively, in collaboration with the behavior team.
  • Practice compassionate care for the animals in our shelter and encourage all staff to do the same through established protocols and ongoing education.

Compensation: $160,000 - $200,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

Requirements:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an accredited institution with no history of disciplinary action. Advanced training or certification in shelter medicine is preferred.
  • Valid State of Florida Veterinary license.
  • Valid DEA license or the ability to obtain one.
