Job Summary

As a Senior Assistant General Counsel in the Employment Law Group at Raymond James, you will play a critical role in managing legal matters related to labor and employment law. Under general direction and with a high level of autonomy, you will use your extensive knowledge and skills to provide proactive, strategic advice to partners across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor legislation, regulations, case law, and government enforcement activities on a broad range of employment legal matters.
  • Provide pragmatic and scalable advice on employment matters, including recruiting, hiring, leave and accommodation management, benefits, employee relations, restrictive covenants, discipline, wage and hour, contingent workforce, diversity, and job restructuring.
  • Lead major projects, programs, or processes that have significant business impact and involve cross-functional teams.
  • Maintain extensive contact with internal customers, Senior Management, and outside counsel to identify, research, analyze, and resolve complex legal issues.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide advice, counsel, and support to assigned functional areas and recommend corporate actions to Senior Management.
  • Oversee and manage outside counsel in activities associated with assigned functional areas.
  • Partner with other employment lawyers, the broader legal team, and key teams and stakeholders across the organization on relevant matters.
  • Perform human resource management activities, including identifying performance problems, approving recommendations for remedial action, evaluating performance, and interviewing Legal department staff.
  • Plan, assign, monitor, review, and evaluate the work of Legal department staff.
  • Coach and mentor others, including developing continuing education programs and career development opportunities.
  • Interpret, apply, and recommend changes to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Review progress of assignments with Senior Management.
  • Balance conflicting resource and priority demands.
Qualifications
  • Advanced concepts, principles, and practices of laws and regulations related to assigned functional areas, including US labor and employment laws.
  • Advanced concepts on global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion matters.
  • Counseling on or litigation related to recruiting/relocation programs and/or immigration compliance, and/or other employment-related compliance.
Skills and Abilities
  • Communication, interpersonal skills, and experience in quickly building trust with team members and influencing cross-functional partners.
  • Managing a large volume of complex corporate legal matters.
  • Developing, preparing, and presenting case theories and strategies.
  • Preparing and delivering written and oral presentations on legal issues to associates of all levels.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) with excellent academic credentials and a minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience in the relevant practice area(s).
  • Member in good standing in at least one state bar and ability to obtain Florida Authorized House Counsel if not a member of the Florida bar.
