POSITION SUMMARY:

The Aquatic Specialist plays a crucial role in aquatic services, providing lifeguarding, swim education, assistance with pool operations, and supervision of the pool area. This position aims to support lifeguards and instructors by addressing member inquiries and facilitating general activities on the pool deck, including engaging parents in overseeing their children.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Oversees the pool deck area, entrances, and high-traffic zones.
  2. Familiarizes with all emergency protocols and responds to emergencies promptly in line with YMCA policies. Completes necessary reports as required.
  3. Maintains positive and effective relationships with members, participants, and colleagues.
  4. Addresses member inquiries and provides necessary assistance.
  5. Supports staff in managing any incidents that may arise on the pool deck.
  6. Trained in the emergency action plan and understands their role within it.
  7. Participates in all required staff meetings and training sessions.
  8. Complies with all YMCA of South Hampton Roads policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and best practices.
  9. Follows safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards related to COVID-19 prevention.
  10. Assists in various areas as assigned and completes all tasks and projects designated by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be a Lifeguard III if not a YMCA lifeguard; must obtain YMCA certification within 180 days of hire.
  • Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council). Any BLS certification is valid for one year only.
  • Must achieve YMCA Swim Lesson instructor certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to maintain the physical and mental readiness required for certification.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguarding, instructional, and pool operation skills per YMCA standards.
  • Maintain all necessary certifications and training.
  • Minimum age requirement of 18.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Ability to pass the lifeguard water test.
  2. Must remain alert at all times.
  3. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  4. Capable of hearing sounds and distinguishing distress signals.
  5. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  6. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks necessary for water rescues.
  7. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distances in both normal and loud environments.
  8. Ability to work in various environments, including humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
  9. Must be able to lift and pull weights of up to 50 pounds.
