Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Staff Attorney to join our team in the Department of Legal Research. As a Staff Attorney, you will provide legal research services to the judges of the circuit, general district, and juvenile and domestic relations district courts, as well as the staff of the Office of the Executive Secretary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct sophisticated legal research, including familiarity with Lexis+ and/or other automated research tools.
  • Review legislation before the Virginia General Assembly to determine its effect on the Virginia court system.
  • Represent the court system at the General Assembly and in other community meetings and workgroups.
  • Assist in the implementation of recently-enacted legislation in the court system, with a focus on the development and revision of official forms used in the district courts.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice law in Virginia and in good standing with the Virginia State Bar.
  • Ability to do sophisticated legal research and possess superior analytical, verbal, and literary skills.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with 2-5 years of practice experience in Virginia's trial-level state courts, particularly the district courts, or a judicial clerkship with a Virginia state court.
