Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Attorney to join the Special Investigations and Actual Innocence Unit within the Office of the Attorney General. As an Assistant Attorney General, you will play a critical role in researching and writing briefs in the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Virginia in actual innocence cases. You will also conduct oral arguments, evidentiary hearings, and assist with ongoing criminal investigations and prosecutions as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Research and write briefs in the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Virginia in actual innocence cases
  • Conduct oral arguments and evidentiary hearings
  • Assist with ongoing criminal investigations and prosecutions as needed
  • Collaborate with the Section Chief for Special Investigations and Actual Innocence and other team members to achieve unit goals
Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to litigate in all courts, particularly criminal prosecutions
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as evidenced by writing samples and references
  • Minimum of four (4) years of criminal law experience in trial or appellate courts
  • Admittance to the Virginia Bar
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in actual innocence cases
  • Experience in conducting oral arguments and evidentiary hearings
  • Experience in assisting with ongoing criminal investigations and prosecutions
