The Electrical Engineer plays a crucial role in designing and developing automated packaging platforms and supporting systems for Amazon's customers. This involves providing electrical engineering expertise and refining the packaging platforms and automation systems to ensure faster and more efficient delivery.


As a key member of the team, the Electrical Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional engineers to design and execute packaging machinery and automation projects. This includes executing the electrical design work-streams, encompassing panel design, motor & drive sizing, electrical load calculations, system I/O architecture and layout, wireway design and placement, safety/guarding, and incorporation of ancillary systems at the project / platform level.


The Electrical Engineer will deliver engineering workstreams, including panel design and layout, power calculations, safety analysis and compliance with appropriate regulations (UL, CSA, CE, etc.), electrical schematics, electrical hardware selection including HMI, PLC, servo axis controllers and drives, VFD's and I/O racks. They will also ensure project documentation is complete and scalable for manufacturing.


Additionally, the Electrical Engineer will support the project team in the safety certification of the project / platform (CE, UL, CSA, TUV, etc.) and manage external vendors in developing solutions. They will participate in meetings to optimize for customer experience, supply chain, and sustainability.


As an Electrical Engineer, you will work with interdisciplinary teams to architect and execute electrical designs from concept to production, including prototyping, validation, testing, and certification. You will design industrial electrical systems and work closely with the Mechanical and Controls team. You will also write and develop functional specifications, design verification plans and test procedures.


The team aligns mechatronics and packaging into one organization, enabling Amazon to develop, deploy and scale automated solutions across the Amazon Fulfillment Network. This group works backwards from deep customer insights to deliver solutions that seamlessly integrate into brownfield and greenfield deployments with safety as a top priority.


Basic Qualifications:

  • BS / MS in Electrical Engineering (or similar field)
  • 7+ years of experience designing the electrical connections inside industrial electrical AC/DC and DC/DC cabinets with voltages in the VAC and 5-60VDC ranges.
  • 7+ years of experience supporting production systems in the industrial environment
  • 5+ years of experience designing schematics for industrial applications
  • 4+ years of experience design with industry safety standards (UL508A preferred)
  • 4+ years of experience with hands-on prototyping of solutions in the lab
  • 2+ years of experience managing external vendors (ODM, OEM)
  • Ability to support domestic and international travel as required by the program


Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS / PhD in Electrical Engineering (or similar field)
  • Excellent written (white papers) and oral communication skills
  • 4+ years of experience applying IEC 60204 and/or IEC 61508 machinery safety standards
  • 4+ years of experience project management of technical projects
  • 3+ years of experience in industrial programming (HMI, PLC, Motion)
  • 3+ years of experience operations in a manufacturing environment
