Chief Financial Officer

A prominent nonprofit organization is seeking a skilled CFO to oversee its financial operations. This executive role will report directly to the President and play a vital part in the management team. The selected candidate will be responsible for the comprehensive oversight of all financial, accounting, and reporting functions, which include managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, budget formulation and analysis, as well as grants administration and compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct and manage all financial accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems to ensure adherence to GAAP standards and regulatory obligations.
  • Oversee financial, project/program, and grant accounting, ensuring alignment of expenditures with grant and program budgets throughout the funding period.
  • Prepare, review, and submit financial documentation for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Manage cash flow for federal awards and maintain internal financial reporting systems; oversee all federal expenditures and develop an electronic data filing system.
  • Guide staff on federal funding and donor requirements, including cost principles, audit standards, and reporting obligations.
  • Lead the preparation and facilitation of all external audits, including the annual Proforma 990.
  • Establish and maintain internal controls and safeguards for revenue receipt, cost management, program budgets, and actual expenditures.
  • Develop and execute the annual budgeting and planning process.
  • Communicate financial statements on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis; monitor progress and changes while keeping senior leadership informed of financial health.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with the Board's Finance and Audit Committee, addressing issues and trends in financial operations.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting in collaboration with Department heads; work closely with management to evaluate the financial effectiveness of program operations and establish necessary finance and administrative systems.
  • Coordinate finance, audit, and accounting activities across various departments, with some international travel required.
  • Assist overseas offices with budgeting, budget analysis, and identifying funding needs.
  • Define accountabilities; communicate and enforce organizational values, policies, and procedures; oversee recruitment, training, and performance management of staff.
  • Support the Board Budget and Finance Committee, ensuring effective service and support.
  • Monitor and manage the performance of invested assets in accordance with policies and investment guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations by reviewing existing and new legislation and taking necessary actions.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to ensure legal compliance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Active CPA certification.
  • Experience in federal grant and contract management, particularly with U.S. State Department, USAID/BHA, and/or Department of Homeland Security funding.
  • Experience in managing overseas grants, particularly in compliance and reporting for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in a financial leadership role, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong background in coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and investment accounting.
  • Knowledge of accounting standards applicable to U.S. nonprofit organizations, A-133 federal audit requirements, and Uniform Guidance Standards.
  • Experience in selecting and overseeing software implementations and managing vendor relationships.
  • Advanced proficiency in accounting and reporting software (preferably Sage Intacct or similar).
  • Experience in recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; ability to convey complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels.
