POSITION SUMMARY:

The Certified Recovery Peer Advocate is a vital role requiring cultural competence and sensitivity to the unique needs of the community served. This position demands strong computer proficiency and the ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team. A solid understanding of therapeutic practices and group dynamics based on evidence-based methodologies for intervention and management is essential. Peer Support services focus on rehabilitation and recovery, aiming to equip individuals with skills to manage behavioral health challenges while leveraging natural resources and promoting recovery-oriented principles such as hope, self-efficacy, and community living skills. This role employs trauma-informed, non-clinical support to facilitate sustained recovery from behavioral health disorders.

Under the guidance of the Recovery Specialist Supervisor, the following qualifications and skills are necessary. The advocate ensures a strengths-based, person-centered approach to care within a culturally and linguistically appropriate therapeutic environment. The responsibilities outlined below are critical to the effective operation of the department and align with our organizational mission. All personnel in this role are expected to maintain satisfactory attendance and perform assigned duties competently, cooperatively, and promptly. The job description will be reviewed periodically for relevance and adjustments based on operational needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver rehabilitative and recovery-focused interventions for clients with substance use disorders.
  • Facilitate the development of coping strategies and management of behavioral health symptoms.
  • Assist in creating relapse prevention strategies.
  • Conduct assessments and facilitate groups focused on substance use and dependency.
  • Employ motivational interviewing and other evidence-based practices to support individuals at various stages of change in reducing substance use.
  • Collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team that emphasizes client-centered and holistic care; accompany clients to appointments and ensure seamless referrals, including health home services.
  • Effectively communicate with clients and relevant contacts while conducting outreach for care coordination.
  • Advocate for clients by assisting them in accessing benefits, housing, food, and appropriate community care.
  • Conduct follow-up visits with individuals post-discharge from facilities to enhance community integration and readiness for subsequent visits with mental health providers.
  • Support the selection and use of self-directed recovery tools, including relapse prevention planning.
  • Connect clients with local self-help groups.
  • Provide recovery education and counseling to clients and their families.
  • Facilitate transitional support from institutional settings (jail, hospital, rehab) to home environments.
  • Offer preventative and crisis intervention services.
  • Conduct training and development for parenting skills.
  • Lead family groups to enhance social skills, reduce isolation, provide emotional support, and foster ongoing natural support.
  • Participate in staff and organizational meetings as needed for care coordination and policy development.
  • Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate and co-facilitate evidence-based practice groups.
  • Contribute to the curriculum development process for evidence-based practice groups.
  • Complete necessary office tasks as required.
  • Engage in wellness and health promotion activities.
  • Follow up with individuals and their support networks to confirm connections to care coordination, outpatient treatment, or other community services.
  • Perform additional relevant duties as assigned by management.
  • Adhere to established policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or jurisdictionally certified equivalent.
  • Current Certified Recovery Peer Advocate certification is required; provisional certification accepted with a timeline for full certification.
  • Completion of Mandated Reporter Training is necessary.
  • Training in Trauma-Informed Care and familiarity with Military and Veteran's culture is required or must be completed within one month of employment.
  • Experience or a strong desire to work with individuals facing mental health or substance use challenges.
  • Professional demeanor and a positive attitude are essential.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members.
  • Team-oriented mindset with flexibility and a helpful approach.
  • Proficient in computer applications including Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and electronic communication tools.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized, motivated self-starter.
  • Strong time management abilities.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) is strongly preferred.
