POSITION SUMMARY:

The Certified Recovery Peer Advocate is a role that necessitates cultural awareness and sensitivity towards the needs of the designated population. Candidates should possess strong computer skills and be adept at functioning within an interdisciplinary team. A solid understanding of therapeutic practices and group dynamics based on evidence-based methodologies for intervention and management is essential. Peer Support services are delivered by peers with a focus on rehabilitation and recovery, aimed at enhancing skills for coping with and managing behavioral health challenges while promoting the use of natural resources and recovery-oriented principles such as hope, self-efficacy, and community living skills. This role employs trauma-informed, non-clinical support to facilitate long-term recovery from behavioral health disorders.

Under the guidance of the Recovery Specialist Supervisor, the following outlines the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position. The provider ensures a strengths-based, person-centered approach to care within a culturally and linguistically appropriate therapeutic environment. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver rehabilitative and recovery-focused interventions for clients with substance use disorders.
  • Facilitate the development of coping skills and management strategies for behavioral health symptoms.
  • Assist in creating relapse prevention strategies.
  • Conduct assessments and group sessions specifically addressing substance use and dependency.
  • Utilize motivational interviewing and other evidence-based practices (EBP) to support individuals at various stages of change in reducing substance use.
  • Collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team that emphasizes client-centered and holistic care; accompany clients to appointments and facilitate warm handoff referrals, including health home services.
  • Effectively communicate with clients and relevant contacts while conducting outreach for care coordination.
  • Provide advocacy services for clients, assisting them in obtaining benefits, food, housing, and appropriate community care.
  • Conduct follow-up visits with individuals post-discharge from hospitals, rehabilitation centers, or inpatient stays to support community integration and readiness for subsequent visits with mental health providers.
  • Assist in selecting and utilizing self-directed recovery tools, including relapse prevention strategies.
  • Connect individuals with community self-help groups.
  • Offer recovery education and counseling to clients and their families.
  • Facilitate transitional support from institutional settings (jail, hospital, rehab) to the individual’s home.
  • Provide preventative and crisis intervention services.
  • Support parent skills development and training.
  • Conduct family group sessions to enhance social skills, reduce isolation, provide emotional support, and foster ongoing natural support.
  • Participate in staff and organizational meetings as needed for care coordination and policy development.
  • Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate and co-facilitate EBP group sessions.
  • Contribute as a member of the EBP curriculum development team.
  • Complete administrative tasks as required.
  • Engage in wellness and health promotion activities.
  • Follow up with individuals and their support networks to confirm connections to care coordination, outpatient treatment, or other community services.
  • Perform additional relevant duties as assigned by supervisor/management.
  • Adhere to established policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or jurisdictionally certified high school equivalency is required.
  • Current Certified Recovery Peer Advocate certification is mandatory; provisional certification will be accepted with a commitment to obtain full certification within 12 months.
  • Completion of Mandated Reporter Training is required.
  • Training in Trauma-Informed Care and Military and Veteran's culture is necessary, or must be completed within one month of employment.
  • Experience or a strong desire to work with individuals experiencing mental illness or substance use disorders.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude and maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with team members.
  • Team-oriented with a flexible and helpful approach.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and electronic communication tools such as internet and email.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized, motivated self-starter.
  • Excellent time management abilities.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) is strongly preferred.
