JOB OVERVIEW
The RN First Assistant plays a crucial role in the Surgical Services department, responsible for executing the OR Circulator RN responsibilities. This includes the planning, implementation, and assessment of patient care within the surgical environment, alongside fulfilling the duties of a surgical first assistant.

Key Responsibilities
Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of professional nursing care delivery, adhering to the standards set by the MN Board of Nursing and the policies of Saint Luke's Hospital. Ensures the provision of human, technical, and material resources necessary for the safe and efficient completion of surgical procedures. Actively contributes to the overall efficiency, safety, workflow, and resource utilization of the unit.

Clinical Competence
Integrates clinical expertise and technical skills essential for surgical nursing, as outlined in the surgical nurse orientation checklist. Must be prepared to respond to call within thirty (30) minutes.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Refer to Licensure/Certification/Registration requirements.

Experience:
A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the operating room (RN, ST) is preferred, with the possibility of negotiation based on comparable experience.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Must hold a current Minnesota Registered Nurse license.
BLS Certification as either a BLS Provider or Healthcare Provider from recognized organizations is required, along with certification from a first assistant program (RN, NP, ST).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
As specified for particular vacancies.
Graduation from an accredited Surgical Assisting program is advantageous.

Experience:
Two (2) years of recent experience in operating room or procedural nursing is preferred, along with additional experience as specified for particular vacancies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Possesses knowledge of contemporary nursing principles and techniques, with the ability to apply the nursing process and conduct physical assessments effectively. Capable of functioning as a team leader and primary nurse, demonstrating accountability for decisions and outcomes. Strong communication skills are essential for interacting with patients, families, and healthcare professionals, while maintaining professional relationships.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Requires prolonged standing and walking, with the ability to lift, position, and transfer patients. Must be capable of seeing, hearing, standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds. The work environment may involve exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other unpleasant elements, necessitating the ability to handle emergency situations and varying hours.
