Department Overview:

The College of Visual and Performing Arts is dedicated to fostering creativity and innovation through its comprehensive programs in Film and Video Studies. The department is responsible for organizing a variety of public film screenings, student showcases, and a Visiting Filmmakers Series, while ensuring a collaborative environment among faculty and staff to achieve departmental goals.

Position Overview:

The Events and Marketing Specialist will be instrumental in promoting the Film and Video Studies program, coordinating logistics for various events, including the Visiting Filmmakers Series and student exhibitions, and overseeing student assistants at George Mason University. The ideal candidate will possess a background in marketing and experience in managing arts or film-related events.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Exhibitions and Film Events

  • Plan and execute exhibitions showcasing student films and staged readings, including casting, scheduling, venue logistics, and budget management;
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to provide technical support for student film festivals and other related events;
  • Promote the Film and Video Studies program to enhance recruitment and class enrollment, as well as publicize events such as student film festivals and artist showcases;
  • Maintain program websites and distribute monthly e-newsletters highlighting achievements and upcoming events;
  • Provide a bi-weekly creative digest to students featuring regional and national resources and opportunities.

Visiting Filmmakers Series Management

  • Coordinate and oversee VFS events, managing logistics related to facilities, visiting artists, fundraising, media inquiries, and technical support. Assist in the organization of artist contract payments, travel arrangements, and accommodations.

Information and Resource Management

  • Develop and maintain informational resources for students and alumni regarding productions, exhibitions, job opportunities, and other academic and professional pathways.

Supervision of Student Assistants

  • Recommend and budget for the hiring of student employees to support departmental initiatives;
  • Oversee and mentor student staff, ensuring effective training and development.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Experience in marketing and managing arts or film events;
  • Mid-level administrative experience in an office setting;
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite;
  • Strong organizational skills and familiarity with standard office operations;
  • Competence in Microsoft Office and Mac OSX.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field;
  • Experience in staff management is preferred;
  • Familiarity with various software and platforms such as Banner, 25Live, Drupal, Emma, Canva, Hootsuite, eVA, Mason Finance Gateway, and Patriot Web is advantageous;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse colleagues and students.
