Position Overview

The role of the Financial Counselor is crucial in guiding and supporting patients through their financial responsibilities in the infusion center before they commence treatment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess treatment plans to identify necessary services.
  • Collect pertinent information for eligibility and benefit verification, including diagnosis and billable CPT codes.
  • Confirm eligibility and medical benefits with insurance providers for scheduled services, including infusion treatments and chemotherapy.
  • Secure prior authorizations and necessary prerequisites before services are delivered.
  • Maintain a daily authorization report within the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Ensure patients meet all criteria set by third-party payer reimbursement and clinical policies.
  • Document comprehensive eligibility and benefit information in the patient's electronic chart.
  • Calculate patient financial responsibilities based on treatment pricing.
  • Provide financial treatment estimates and counsel patients prior to the initiation of new treatment regimens.
  • Identify patients requiring financial assistance and coordinate with the financial assistance department.
  • Record all financial counseling interactions in the patient's electronic chart.
  • Prepare daily patient collection reports for the front desk team.
  • Reconcile daily collection reports with actual collections and manage deposits.
  • Communicate any delays in the financial counseling process to nursing and medical staff.
  • Advise front desk personnel on patients needing financial counseling prior to service delivery.
  • Assist patients with inquiries regarding their financial obligations, available assistance, insurance, and benefits.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a financial counselor in an oncology setting.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in oncology coding and billing is essential.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiarity with oncology billing practices, CPT codes, and ICD10 coding.
  • Ability to calculate drug billable units accurately.
  • Understanding of oncology terminology.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) and practice management software.
  • Strong knowledge of payer guidelines and reimbursement policies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Exceptional customer service abilities.
  • Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Effective time management skills.
