Department Overview

We appreciate your interest in joining the Radio-Television-Film Lecturer Pool at San Jose State University.

The Department of Film and Theatre encompasses three primary areas of study: 1) Radio-Television-Film, 2) Theatre Arts, and 3) Dance. These programs are designed to equip students for a variety of professional roles, including actors, dancers, educators, directors, scriptwriters, producers, designers, technicians, managers, and critical writers.

Our department provides comprehensive training and hands-on experience in radio, television, film, theatre production, and dance, alongside courses that delve into the history, scholarship, and aesthetics of these art forms. Students have the opportunity to engage in the creation of both short and feature films through Spartan Film Studios, participate in a full season of theatrical productions, and contribute to various faculty, staff, and student-led projects. Additionally, students can be involved with KSJS 90.5, our department's full-time radio station, which serves the Bay Area with entertainment, sports, and community outreach.

Key Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and respond to the diverse needs of our student population, which includes a wide range of ages, abilities, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, economic statuses, primary languages, sexual orientations, gender identities, and academic preparations through inclusive teaching materials and strategies.
  • Instruct undergraduate courses in Radio-Television-Film (RTVF), including those specific to the RTVF major and General Education offerings; maintain regular office hours; collaborate effectively with colleagues, department chair, and other faculty; and engage in course assessment activities.
  • Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) to organize all classes, ensuring that all courses, whether online or in-person, are anchored in this platform to facilitate faculty-student interaction.
  • Ensure that all classes are conducted as scheduled throughout the semester, adhering to the assigned mode of instruction (asynchronous, synchronous, hybrid, or in-person).
Qualifications Required
  • Applicants should possess an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational objectives of a multicultural student body, as demonstrated through relevant cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable experiences.
  • A Master's degree (M.A. or M.F.A.) or a Ph.D. with substantial professional experience, proven teaching abilities, and expertise in radio, television, and/or film studies, performance, or production.
Compensation

Salary and compensation are determined based on qualifications and experience. For more information regarding salary placement, please refer to the relevant university policy.

Anticipated starting salary ranges are as follows:

L-A / Range 2 - $5007 - $5675
L-B / Range 3 - $5925 - $7125
L-C / Range 4 - $6500 - $8982
L-D / Range 5 - $8184 - $9854

These figures represent the expected monthly salary for full-time academic year faculty, with part-time rates being prorated accordingly.
