SUMMARY OF POSITION
The PTC Equipment Engineer is responsible for maintaining and providing support for troubleshooting, diagnostics, and inspections of PTC Onboard systems.

ROLE OVERVIEW:
This position involves working within a structured framework established by senior personnel. The engineer will assist in diagnosing and resolving MDM (messaging) issues, managing software versions, and performing manual uploads of track files.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Facilitate upgrades and maintenance of PTC Onboard software and hardware in collaboration with back-office teams and equipment vendors.
  • Support contractors or vendors specializing in the assessment, repair, and troubleshooting of PTC onboard equipment failures.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to assist in training for various PTC and TMC systems, including the Computer Display Unit (CDU).
  • Engage with other departments and contractors to troubleshoot and repair locomotive and cab car systems, focusing on electrical, mechanical, air brake, event recorder, communication, and mechanical components that affect PTC functionality.
  • Conduct remote diagnostics of the fleet by reviewing fault logs and understanding the severity of issues to determine necessary actions.
  • Provide on-call assistance during priority or emergency situations as required.
  • Coordinate PTC equipment movements and test trains with the Operations department.
  • Participate in a rotating schedule for weekend and night on-call duties with other team members.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Requires an Associate degree in electronics, mechanical systems, computer science, or management information systems, along with a minimum of two years of relevant work experience in electronics, navigation, and communication systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Registered and licensed Professional Engineer in California.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Understanding of PTC System Fundamentals and Maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain positive service relationships with providers.
  • Familiarity with freight and passenger railroad operations and train control.
  • Basic experience with Unix/Linux systems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The role requires the ability to transition between stationary positions and move throughout various work environments, including office settings and outdoor locations. The engineer must be capable of operating tools and equipment, transporting items up to 25 lbs, and effectively communicating in a variety of situations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position involves working in a standard office environment with minimal exposure to excessive noise or temperature extremes, as well as outdoor environments with potential exposure to construction sites and moving mechanical parts.
