SUMMARY OF POSITION
The PTC Equipment Engineer is responsible for maintaining and supporting the troubleshooting, diagnostics, and inspections of PTC Onboard systems.

ROLE OVERVIEW:
This position entails working within a defined procedural framework, under the guidance of senior personnel, to ensure the effective operation of PTC Onboard equipment.

SUPERVISION:
Reports to departmental management with no formal supervisory duties.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in diagnosing and troubleshooting MDM (messaging) issues, software updates, and manual uploads of track files.
  • Perform upgrades and maintain PTC Onboard software and hardware in collaboration with the Back Office and equipment vendors.
  • Support contractors or vendors specializing in the evaluation and repair of PTC onboard equipment failures.
  • Work alongside Human Resources to facilitate training on various PTC and TMC systems.
  • Collaborate with other departments and contractors to troubleshoot and repair locomotive and cab car systems, including electrical, mechanical, and communication components affecting PTC functionality.
  • Conduct remote diagnostics of fleet issues by reviewing fault logs and assessing severity and required actions.
  • Respond to priority situations and provide on-call assistance as necessary.
  • Coordinate PTC equipment movements and test trains with the Operations department.
  • Engage with other Equipment Engineers in troubleshooting and diagnostics of MDM issues.
  • Oversee the education and training of maintenance personnel on diagnostic processes and event recorder log downloads.
  • Participate in rotating weekend and night on-call duties as part of the PTC Onboard team.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate degree in electronics, mechanical systems, computer science, or management information systems, along with a minimum of two years of relevant experience in electronics and communication systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Registered and licensed Professional Engineer in California.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Understanding of PTC System Fundamentals and Maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain positive service relationships with providers.
  • Familiarity with freight and passenger railroad operations.
  • Basic knowledge of Unix/Linux systems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to transition between desk work and movement around facilities, operate tools and equipment, and communicate effectively. Must be capable of lifting up to 25 lbs and navigating various work environments.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
This role requires working in both office and outdoor environments, including construction sites and railroad tracks, with potential exposure to noise and moving machinery.
