Advanced Practice Nurse Anesthetist

WORK LOCATION:

· Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

· Educational Background: Master’s degree in nursing.

· Training: Completion of a National League of Nursing accredited nursing program and an approved anesthesia training program recognized by the Council on Accreditation of Nursing Anesthetists (COA).

· Certification: Must possess and maintain one of the following:

o Certification from the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists

o Registered Nurse Anesthetist certification from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA)

o Certification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).

· Additional Certifications: Must hold the following hands-on certifications from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross:

o Current Basic Life Support (BLS)

o Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

o Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

o DEA registration number is required.

· Experience: Must have recent experience (minimum of 3 months within the last year) in administering epidural anesthesia. Ability to document patient encounters within seventy-two (72) hours is essential. Experience in delivering and monitoring various anesthesia types for obstetrical and surgical procedures is required.

· Licensure: Must hold a current and unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse anesthetist in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

· Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.

· Language Proficiency: Must be able to read, write, and speak English proficiently.

· Physical Requirements: Must be capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods and able to perform all required services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Oversee the anesthesia experience for patients, conduct preoperative assessments, administer monitored anesthesia care, and manage patient responses to anesthesia and surgical procedures.

· Conduct thorough pre-anesthetic evaluations, including obtaining informed consent, requesting necessary consultations, and prescribing pre-anesthetic medications.

· Formulate and implement a comprehensive anesthetic care plan.

· Perform assessments prior to anesthesia induction, reviewing medical records for completeness and any changes in the patient's condition.

· Maintain physiological stability for patients and address any abnormal responses to anesthesia or surgery.

· Collect and analyze patient physiological data using non-invasive monitoring techniques.

· Manage patient airway and respiratory status effectively.

· Facilitate patient recovery from anesthesia, ensuring homeostasis and managing pain relief and potential complications through appropriate medication and support.

· Document all relevant events during anesthesia administration, including dosages and durations of anesthetic agents and other medications.

· Record post-anesthetic evaluations, noting any anesthesia-related complications.

· Serve as a resource and assist in training staff, including acting as clinical adjunctive faculty for student nurse anesthetists.

· Adhere to infection control protocols and universal precautions at all times.

· Monitor anesthesia care and patient experiences, performing evaluations and managing fluid therapy, while advising on any adverse reactions.

· Ensure the cleanliness and proper maintenance of anesthesia equipment.

WORK SCHEDULE:

· The facility operates 24/7, with shifts that may include 8, 10, or 12 hours, across all days of the week, including weekends and holidays.

· A minimum 30-minute unpaid meal break is provided during shifts.

· Typical shifts may vary based on mission requirements.

· Services will not exceed 80 hours in a two-week period, and consecutive 24-hour shifts are not permitted.

· Overtime must be pre-approved for hours exceeding 80 in a two-week period.

· Work on federally recognized holidays is required.

Must thrive in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating flexibility and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Strong teamwork and time management skills are essential, along with the capacity to meet deadlines in a demanding setting. A high level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change is crucial.
