Glide Memorial Church is a hybrid spiritual center of healing, faith, justice, and community for everyone. Each week, people experience Glide's legendary Sunday Celebrations. Glide Church offers everyone opportunities for social connection and acknowledgment of personal, social and spiritual transformation. Since the 1960's, The Glide Ensemble and the Change Band have spread the spirit of unconditional love through music, voice, rehearsal, and performance. The Ensemble shares in songs and stories of empowerment, an infectious message of diversity, acceptance, and love.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the choir and the musical team, utilizing various in-person and software methods to ensure effective collaboration and communication.
  • Support the development of choir members, fostering a culture of growth, learning, and artistic expression.
  • Responsible for arranging and organizing music, determining the role of each choir member, and ensuring a cohesive and engaging performance.
  • Recruit, facilitate, and conduct singing auditions for new and past choir members, working closely with the Assistant Choir Director.
  • Collaborate with the band to select and arrange music that complements the choir, ensuring a harmonious and engaging performance.
  • Accompany and conduct the choir, singing as a music leader to inspire and motivate the ensemble.
  • Ensure the music is proportioned and synchronized to avoid distractions during worship, maintaining a high level of professionalism and artistry.
  • Lead the congregation in community singing, assigning individuals to lead and ensuring a unified and engaging experience.
  • Choose songs that align with the genres of gospel, jazz, blues, folk, and R&B, reflecting the roots of Glide Memorial Church and The Glide Ensemble.
  • Coordinate with other churches and arts institutions to perform songs during outside events and activities, promoting collaboration and community engagement.
  • Organize an annual choir building outing for continuing education, expansion, and growth, working closely with the Assistant Choir Director and choir guides.
  • Research and select new and old songs for Sunday Celebrations and events, leading weekly rehearsals to ensure a high level of preparation and performance.
  • Provide choir members with access to materials for rehearsing, ensuring a clear and effective learning process.
  • Participate as a creative partner on the Celebration Planning Team for the archival video of Ensemble, contributing to the development of Virtual Sunday Celebrations.
  • Attend weekly Planning Team meetings, dress-rehearsals, and Sunday Celebrations, demonstrating a commitment to the mission and values of Glide.

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.
  • Mastery in playing a musical instrument, reading music, and ability to sing are required.
  • Direct experience conducting and leading a medium to large choir is necessary.
  • Knowledgeable of different musical genres and rooted in black gospel music traditions is essential.
  • Experience managing, conducting, and working with band, choirs, or other musical groups is required.
  • Maintain a high standard of integrity and passion for the rehearsal and performance process, representing the ideals of Glide.
  • Ability to work effectively across cultures, demonstrating a commitment to learning and working respectfully with people different from themselves.
  • Possesses strong leadership and interpersonal skills to handle the group effectively.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills for conveying knowledge or information to the group.
  • Excellent conducting and vocal skills are necessary.
  • A music degree is highly desirable, but not required.
