Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor will oversee the scheduling, coordination, and auditing of maintenance tasks, including preventative, mechanical, and electrical repairs for the vehicle fleet. This role provides access to advanced technology, tools, and training, and involves participating in the recruitment and training of a team of mechanics to ensure compliance with customer needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Terminal Manager to supervise maintenance personnel, including recruitment and disciplinary actions, while also managing performance evaluations and providing necessary technical and safety training.
  • Review repair orders, assess completed work by mechanics, maintain records of repairs, and communicate vehicle availability with Dispatch.
  • Assist in diagnosing and resolving mechanical issues, and may also train mechanics on correct procedures.
  • Coordinate building services and grounds maintenance as required.
  • Manage fuel and parts ordering, maintain inventory, and oversee subcontracted repair work.
  • Ensure compliance with fleet inspection and repair protocols as per company policies and relevant regulations.
  • Address defects noted during inspections and ensure timely repairs are made before vehicles are put back into service.
  • Prepare detailed reports on maintenance activities and conduct quality control inspections on completed repairs.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance documentation and records.
  • Ensure a clean and safe working environment for all staff.
  • Optimize repair and maintenance operations for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Assist in aligning work schedules with operational needs and contribute to the development of quality control initiatives.
  • Conduct research on maintenance techniques and assist in vehicle replacement evaluations.
  • Oversee the engagement of external vendors and assess their performance, providing technical support in service contract management.
  • Audit parts, tools, and fuel inventories to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Support the Fleet Maintenance Management team in drafting and implementing operational policies and procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental and safety regulations daily.
  • Be available for after-hours and emergency situations as needed.
  • Occasionally perform driving duties as required.
  • Work collaboratively with technicians to maintain and repair fleet vehicles, including conducting routine maintenance and utilizing manufacturer software for diagnostics.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficient knowledge of tools, procedures, and safety regulations relevant to the maintenance and repair of various powered equipment.
  • Ability to operate computer systems and learn new software applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with excellent customer service abilities.
  • Familiarity with Federal and State regulations, including EPA and OSHA standards.
  • Operational knowledge of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel vehicles, as well as shop tools and equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule work effectively.
  • Experience in inspecting equipment and diagnosing mechanical issues.
  • Preferred experience with propane/gasoline medium-duty truck engines.
  • ASE Certification(s) is a plus.
  • Physical capability to lift heavy equipment and operate various shop tools.
  • Dependable attendance and ability to pass required background checks.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • This position is safety-sensitive and regulated by DOT standards.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in vehicle and equipment repair.
  • Two to three years of experience as a Technician in the school bus, trucking, or heavy equipment sectors, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License with CDL, passenger, and school bus endorsements, or the ability to obtain these within 90 days of employment.
  • Capability to regularly lift heavy equipment, with a minimum of 50 lbs, and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
  • Provision of personal hand tools necessary for routine maintenance tasks.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License and DOT physical, or the ability to obtain within three months of hire.
  • Maintenance of a complete set of tools on-site for fleet vehicle maintenance.
  • Possession of a Pennsylvania light and heavy-duty truck inspection license or willingness to acquire it within six months of hiring.
