Overview
A specialized 16-bed unit dedicated to managing critical cases involving trauma and neurological conditions during their acute phases. Our patient demographic ranges from young adults to seniors, with an average age of 60. Common cases include blunt force injuries from falls and vehicular incidents, alongside traumatic injuries such as gunshot wounds and stabbings. We also provide care for patients with neurological conditions like strokes, brain bleeds, and seizures. As a Level I Trauma Center, our Registered Nurses are certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) to ensure the highest level of care for pediatric patients before their transfer.

Position Details

LOCATION: Lancaster, PA

HOURS: Full-time (36 hours per week), Night Shift (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM), rotating weekends and holidays

ROLE SUMMARY: The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is a newly licensed RN or an RN with less than 15 months of experience, demonstrating foundational safe practice in alignment with the standards set by the American Nurses Association. This role seeks to integrate essential concepts, knowledge, skills, and attitudes to fulfill the requirements for competent nursing practice. The Clinical Nurse 1 is expected to embody the experience standards of Lancaster General Health, which reflect our mission and are embedded in the professional practice competency domains.

The Clinical Nurse 1 is responsible for delivering direct patient care across a diverse age range, showcasing competencies in Continuous Quality Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, Leadership, Person and Family-Centered Care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology/Informatics.

This role involves close collaboration with the interprofessional healthcare team to ensure coordinated care throughout the continuum. The nurse will focus on developing the necessary knowledge and skills to provide tailored care that considers the physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age-related needs of assigned patients.

The Clinical Nurse 1 will seek guidance from more experienced colleagues and will benefit from constructive feedback while progressing in their ability to manage increasingly complex patient cases. The nurse will demonstrate how their practice aligns with the organizational vision, mission, and goals, adhering to all regulations and standards set by regulatory and accrediting bodies.

The Clinical Nurse 1 is required to complete all competencies associated with this level and is expected to advance to the Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague level within 18 months of professional practice.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Qualified candidates must possess the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • Function as both an independent and collaborative member of the healthcare team as outlined in the unit-based Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Conduct patient assessments focusing on physiological, psychological, and cognitive functions. Evaluate progress towards desired outcomes and adapt care plans based on recognized trends and changes. Collect and manage comprehensive data relevant to the patient's health.
  • Analyze assessment data to identify diagnoses or issues. Develop age-appropriate and culturally sensitive care plans.
  • Implement care knowledgeably and coordinate patient care across various disciplines and caregivers.
  • Provide leadership to team members by effectively communicating care standards and supporting their contributions.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to our values of privacy, quality, respect, service, and teamwork.
  • Assign, delegate, and supervise tasks among team members, ensuring continuity of care and achievement of established outcomes through effective resource utilization.
  • Educate patients on healthy practices and treatment options.
  • Continuously enhance the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices, utilizing technology where appropriate.
  • Consider safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in planning and delivering nursing services.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary responsibilities listed above:
  • Manage rapidly changing situations by following established protocols and coordinating with appropriate health team members and resources.
  • Engage in process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing continuity in nurse-patient relationships and minimizing redundancies.
  • Complete mandatory education and training that includes age-specific needs and interpersonal skills as defined by the unit-based Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to evidence-based practice policies and promptly reporting safety variances.
  • Exhibit pride in work through daily interactions with staff, patients, and others.
  • Pursue experiences and learning activities to develop clinical and professional skills.
  • Provide supervision and mentorship to peers and subordinates to enhance learning experiences and improve the professional practice environment.
  • Participate in the employee performance process related to peers and subordinates, addressing issues as the first level of supervision.
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIRED:
  • Current RN licensure issued by the PA Board of Nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher nursing degree.
  • New hires with a temporary practice permit must take the NCLEX within 60 days of starting in their RN role.
  • A graduate registered nurse may only practice under supervision with a current temporary practice permit.
  • All Clinical Nurse 1 RNs must successfully complete the Nurse Residency Program.
  • CPR Certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be a healthcare provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs.
