Position Overview:

The Texas Historical Commission is seeking a dedicated Architect to support the Historic Sites Division. This role involves engaging in routine to moderately complex architectural tasks, focusing on the preservation, rehabilitation, and maintenance of historic structures across the state.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Chief Architect to manage and oversee the creation of architectural plans and specifications aimed at restoring and repairing historic sites, ensuring adherence to established standards and regulations.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of existing buildings, formulating detailed scopes of work and accurate cost estimates.
  • Utilize software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp to prepare conceptual designs, feasibility studies, and comprehensive construction documents.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of contracted architects, engineers, and consultants to ensure project quality and compliance.
  • Assist in the preparation of solicitation documents and oversee the bidding and contracting processes.
  • Perform Construction Contract Administration tasks during project execution.
  • Maintain organized project records and documentation.
  • Conduct inspections to verify compliance with legal standards and specifications.
  • Monitor building conditions and manage cyclical maintenance activities.
  • Work collaboratively with architects, engineers, and contractors to uphold warranty obligations and coordinate necessary corrective actions.
  • Provide architectural consultation and technical support to field staff at state historic sites.
  • Participate in planning efforts related to collections care, interpretation, and educational initiatives as required.
  • Adhere to a consistent work schedule and maintain regular attendance.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and ethical standards set by the Texas Historical Commission.

Qualifications:

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Graduation from an accredited institution with a degree in Architecture or a related discipline.
  • Current registration as an Architect by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners.
  • Experience in a professional office environment, with a minimum of three years for Architect I and five years for Architect II, focusing on Construction Documents and/or Construction Contract Administration.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or Revit for the production of construction documents.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Architecture, particularly with a focus on Historic Preservation or Architectural History.
  • Experience applying the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
  • Proficiency in SketchUp for creating 3D renderings.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of architectural design principles and historic preservation techniques.
  • Familiarity with building materials and construction methods relevant to both contemporary and historic structures.
  • Knowledge of building codes and life safety regulations, especially as they pertain to historic properties.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Capacity to analyze problems and propose effective solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Work Environment:

This position is primarily office-based but may require site visits to evaluate historic structures, which can involve exposure to various environmental conditions.
