The Director of Rolling Operations is responsible for comprehensive leadership in key areas such as safety, environmental compliance, production efficiency, maintenance, engineering, quality assurance, cost management, and customer satisfaction. This role primarily focuses on the effective execution of strategic business plans and aligning operations with the tactical implementation of production schedules. Achieving these objectives requires fostering a safe and productive workplace through continuous employee engagement and the application of lean manufacturing methodologies to enhance profitability.

The Director of Rolling Operations reports directly to the Manufacturing Manager. The ideal candidate must operate the Rolling department with a business-oriented mindset, collaborating as a partner with other managers and leaders within the facility and broader business unit to achieve results that extend beyond their immediate area. Delivering sustainable results is crucial, alongside the ability to cultivate and develop talent, demonstrating passion, vision, and a proven track record of disciplined execution.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Possess in-depth knowledge of the plant's products, processes, and technologies to meet customer expectations and foster a strong customer-supplier relationship.
  • Establish and communicate a strategic vision with ambitious goals that provide clear direction for the organization, while equipping employees at all levels with the necessary tools for effective communication.
  • Develop a strategic manufacturing roadmap for the next three years, utilizing lean techniques and coaching to enhance maintenance reliability.
  • Lead the continuous development and adjustment of product strategies to optimize costs, performance, and financial returns, collaborating closely with commercial teams, quality assurance, procurement, and plant leadership.
  • Play a significant role in preparing operational budgets, capital plans, and project follow-ups.
  • Implement strategies for improvement to enhance efficiency, spending performance, customer delivery, and safety outcomes.
  • Oversee the efficient operation and management of all departments involved in production to maximize return on investment while adhering to service, quality, and social responsibility objectives.
  • Establish and maintain effective organizational structures and production facilities to ensure competitive manufacturing and market penetration.
  • Educate and mentor direct reports in developing innovative processes to enhance product quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Act consistently in a manner that reflects the values of the organization with integrity and respect for individuals.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure the implementation of effective safety and health programs that meet or exceed established safety goals. Regularly monitor key indicators to identify opportunities for program enhancement.
  • Guarantee that environmental programs comply with regulations and exceed compliance requirements, with ongoing monitoring for effectiveness.

Operational Management

  • Oversee the production flow and material velocity within the Rolling Department to fulfill customer demand while adhering to specifications.
  • Support and guide department leaders in executing monthly production and maintenance plans, ensuring financial targets are achieved.
  • Coordinate departmental activities to meet production schedules and maintenance needs efficiently, while continuously improving the effectiveness of personnel, processes, and facilities.
  • Ensure production is safe, efficient, cost-effective, and reliable, adapting to changing volume requirements.
  • Analyze and implement improvements in process flow, inventory management, and velocity across the entire value stream.
  • Monitor workflow and inventory levels to ensure adherence to schedules and promptly address bottlenecks.
  • Manage relationships with union representatives, ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Collaborate with planning, sales, quality, and finance teams to foster a spirit of cooperation and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure process integrity and equipment reliability, meeting production goals through strategic planning and employee support.

People Development

  • Foster an environment that promotes high engagement, performance, and challenging roles, ensuring effective development and utilization of human resources.
  • Create a positive workplace culture that encourages and recognizes employee contributions, supporting individual growth and integrity.
  • Represent the organization positively within the community, demonstrating both personal and corporate responsibility.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a business or technical discipline.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive management experience in heavy industry.
  • Experience in change management and continuous improvement within a lean manufacturing context.
  • Leadership experience across various metal manufacturing processes, including casting, hot rolling, cold rolling, and finishing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • Extensive exposure to aluminum production processes and equipment.
  • Broad experience in production, maintenance, and engineering.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proven ability to lead teams effectively.
  • Capability to analyze challenges and devise innovative solutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, fostering strong relationships at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to quickly understand organizational operations.
  • Creative thinking and a capacity to drive change.
  • Strong decision-making skills with a results-oriented approach.

Work Environment:

This role involves approximately 60% office work and 40% in a manufacturing setting, requiring adherence to safety protocols. Exposure to machinery and a manufacturing environment is expected.

Physical Requirements:

  • Tasks involve computer work and periods of walking and standing.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Frequent use of hands for handling objects and samples is required.
  • Occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, and talking is necessary.
