Job Title: Chief Operations Officer

Voices College-Bound Language Academies is seeking a strategic and transformational leader to serve as the Chief Operations Officer (COO). The COO will be responsible for developing and maintaining the operational infrastructure to support our five college-preparatory schools in Northern California.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the CEO to establish and accomplish network goals and objectives, codify the strategic plan, and identify key operational successes and sustainable infrastructure.
  • Oversee strategic planning and implementation of all core operational functions related to compliance, risk management, contracts, facilities, data and information systems, and food and transportation services.
  • Mobilize the resources necessary to effectively implement large-scale operational change with a broad understanding of cultural context and success factors; bringing others along at an appropriate pace while fostering an environment that collaborates, shares ideas, and generates innovation.
  • Develop and present updates and forecasts on operations and systems management to the Board of Directors.
  • Supervise and build the capacity of the finance team to effectively oversee all aspects of banking, accounting, compliance, reporting, budgeting, procurement, and financial planning for Voices' schools and the regional office.
  • Maintain sound financial practices, controls, and reporting for the budget, cash flows, and overall finances.
  • Develop and maintain internal financial systems for accounts payable/receivable, weekly deposits, expense reports, and record keeping; handle all compliance related to CalSTARS and 401k benefits.
  • Lead community real estate development projects alongside the Board of Directors and CEO; partner with individuals and corporate partners to raise six and seven-figure deals, diversifying revenue streams.
  • Manage the Voices Academies' operations team which includes the following functions: operations, technology, compliance, risk management, contracts, facilities management, data management and reporting and information systems management, and food and transportation services.
  • Strong people leader who effectively manages, supports, guides, and develops director-level team members; reinforces creative thinking, strategic insight, and takes initiative to move the business and teams forward.
  • Serve as an empathetic coach and an active listener who uses creative approaches and communication to build capacity, and inspire and motivate others to take action.
  • Work with the Network Operations Manager (NOM) to review relationships with external service providers and ensure that all services are completed effectively.
  • Manage the Network Operations Manager (NOM), ensuring that all student data submissions made to the state, authorizer, and granting entities are made in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain oversight and contract management of Network legal documentation (e.g., MOU letters of agreement, contracts, and leases).
  • Maintain custody of leases, operational contracts, and other similar documents and instruments relating to the Charter and schools in the Voices Academies Network.
  • Together with the NOM, ensure the provision of food and facilities services for all schools in the Network and work with each site's Business Managers to facilitate the effective delivery of these and other operational services.
  • Implement best practices for risk management and safety and oversee key systems including annual safety planning, mass notification system, and visitor management systems.
  • Work with the IT team to maintain Network user-friendly tools (i.e. data dashboard) for internal and external use including training others so data can be automatically aggregated and reported.
  • Oversee the Network Technology Manager ensuring that there is proper technology planning and support for the Voices Academies' CMO (El Zocalo) and schools.
  • Enhance and make strategic recommendations for tech, data governance, IT support, product management, and product development.
  • Manage recruitment and enrollment systems to adapt to the educational market climate.
Requirements:
  • 7+ years of demonstrated operations experience, and at least 3 years on a leadership team.
  • Bachelor's degree required; may hold master's degree in education, business, or strategy.
  • Demonstrated passion for the mission, vision, and values of Voices Academies with a deep commitment to improving the lives of students from low-income communities.
  • Ability to establish, implement, oversee, and adhere to effective business systems.
  • Proven ability to create and implement strategic initiatives across a network.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to attract, develop, and maintain stakeholder relationships; exceptional ability to bridge and enhance collaborative working relationships.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills and works well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Outstanding written, speaking, and organizational skills with experience interacting with a broad range of stakeholders and exercise excellent judgment in decision-making.
  • Become familiar with applicable laws and regulations that govern CMOs and develop and adhere to systems that ensure compliance with those laws and regulations.

  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Google Suite.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of and experience working with underserved communities preferred.
  • Proven track record of success managing school employees to achieve ambitious goals.
  • Knowledge of K-12 education, and education reform in particular.
  • Experience leading in a fluid, start-up environment.
  • Understanding of dual-language instructional practices and school design and the unique characteristics of public charter schools is a plus.

Compensation and Employee Requirements:
  • Full-time exempt position with an annual salary range of $160,000 - $205,000 - based on experience.
