Job Summary

The Trauma/Surgical ICU (TSICU) is a 28-bed critical care unit specializing in the care of traumatically injured patients or those undergoing complex surgeries requiring close monitoring and care. Patients are admitted directly from the Emergency Department, the Ross Trauma Admitting Area, or the operating room. Patients typically cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures, and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. Many patients cared for in the TSICU are poly-trauma, with injuries involving more than one body system. Common surgical patients include those undergoing Whipple procedures, esophagectomies, gastrostomies, and abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Responsibilities
  • Assists with patients' activities of daily living and plan of care under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Communicates with and supports the healthcare team, patients, and/or patients' family or significant other(s).
  • Maintains and demonstrates high standards of professional ethics.
  • Supports the activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting/hygiene, and assisting with mobility and transport.
  • Performs technical duties as directed by RN, such as phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, Foley catheter care specific to the population served, and documents appropriately.
  • Identifies and communicates changes in patients' status to RN and responds appropriately.
  • Reinforces education of patients and family/responsible party regarding individual care needs and safety issues.
  • Participates in Cooper patient satisfaction initiatives and goals.
  • Participates in the performance improvement activities.
  • Assists in orientation of new hires.
  • Completes annual unit-specific competencies by the specified due date.
  • Attends Staff Meetings when available for document review of staff meeting minutes.
  • Assists in admission, transfers, and discharges of patients to and from the unit.
Requirements
  • Active EMT certification.
  • 0-2 years of experience preferred.
  • High School/GED.
  • Qualifications/Certifications:
    • Successful completion of an unlicensed healthcare provider/technician program.
    • Completed at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited RN Program.
    • 1 year or more patient care experience in a similar role.
  • AHA Basic Life Support certification - required.
