Overview:

The Trauma/Surgical ICU (TSICU) is a specialized 28-bed critical care unit focused on the treatment of patients with traumatic injuries or those undergoing intricate surgeries that necessitate close observation and care.

Patients are admitted directly from the Emergency Department, the Ross Trauma Admitting Area, or the operating room.

Common patients in this unit include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures, and lung injuries, as well as various orthopedic injuries that require constant monitoring and attention.

Many individuals treated in the TSICU are poly-trauma cases, with injuries affecting multiple body systems. Typical surgical patients include those undergoing Whipple procedures, esophagectomies, gastrostomies, and abdominal aortic aneurysms.

The unit is staffed by registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners, resident physicians, and attending trauma surgeons.

Staff collaborate closely with respiratory therapists and specialized surgical teams, including orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians in this area receive targeted education specific to trauma patient care.
