Senior Grant Writer

Reports to: Development Director or Advancement Director

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate assignments to assess compatibility and rationale, focusing on guidelines and previously funded proposals or alignment with donors for outreach and engagement.
  • Create new written materials including templates, donor engagement documents, informational papers, executive summaries, biographies, case statements, and more as necessary.
  • Facilitate training for initial review processes of assigned client grants, overseeing first reviews.
  • Draft grant proposals for both general operational and programmatic support as designated.
  • Compile, author, and refine applications, letters, and inquiries demonstrating strong expository writing abilities and a high-level command of grammar and spelling.
  • Provide initial round edits as instructed.
  • Review budgets and other necessary attachments for which funding is sought, ensuring all required items/forms are readily available or requested from the client in a timely manner for submission deadlines. Responsible for securing the most current and approved budget along with other essential attachments for any assigned grant.
  • Establish contact with funders, program officers, and staff as needed to gather relevant information regarding fit, prior to submission and during their review of a submitted grant or request as directed; provide additional supportive materials when requested.
  • Assist in training staff members.
  • Initiate protocols that enhance organizational processes.
  • Lead meetings for grant writers (coordinate, set agenda, obtain approval, and facilitate).
  • Manage projects related to grant assignments.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience working with nonprofit organizations; experience in grant writing and fundraising is preferred.
  • Proven experience in drafting and submitting public sector RFPs, particularly with state and federal government agencies.
  • Specialized knowledge in grant writing, for instance: youth development, education, mental health, nutrition.
  • Educational background in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field is preferred.
  • Exceptional written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, including the ability to maintain data systems, prioritize tasks, meet multiple deadlines, and collaborate with teams.
  • Proficient in computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with statewide funders.
  • Ability to provide expertise and establish contacts.
