Law Enforcement Officer

Compensation: Qualified lateral transfer candidates will receive an annual salary starting at either $101,000 (Step 3) or $109,000 (Step 4), contingent upon qualifications as outlined in the Deputy Sheriff's Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Overview: The primary responsibilities of this position involve supporting the law enforcement operations of the County's Sheriff's Office. Duties include safeguarding life and property, enforcing laws and regulations, and conducting investigations throughout the jurisdiction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct patrols in unincorporated areas to prevent and identify criminal activity; perform crime scene investigations; enforce applicable laws and regulations; provide public assistance as necessary.
- Respond to reported incidents; secure crime scenes; interview victims and witnesses; collect and preserve evidence; apprehend suspects; prepare necessary documentation.
- Investigate accidents and provide emergency first aid until professional medical assistance arrives.
- Issue citations and notices of infraction for violations of state laws and county regulations; execute arrest warrants.
- Address citizen complaints; respond to inquiries; offer information regarding laws and regulations; assist in problem resolution; refer cases to appropriate agencies as needed.
- Supervise prisoners at medical facilities and court; transport detainees to and from detention facilities and court appearances.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare required reports.
- Testify in court as a credible witness when necessary.
Additional Duties:
- May engage in specialized unit duties based on experience and unit policies.
- May oversee the activities of volunteer personnel.
- May perform supervisory duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED certificate; an associate degree or 90 college credits in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field is preferred.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or DACA recipient; minimum age of 20 years; no maximum age limit.
- Must successfully pass job-related assessments.
Special Requirements:
- A valid Washington State Driver's License is required prior to appointment.
- Must successfully complete a Civil Service examination and various pre-employment evaluations, including a comprehensive background check, fingerprinting, and medical assessments.
- Employees must be armed while on duty and carry official identification.
- Regular qualification with a firearm is mandatory.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Understanding of basic law enforcement practices and procedures.
- Proficient in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Basic computer skills and defensive driving knowledge.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Working Conditions: This role involves frequent interaction with distressed individuals, outdoor work in various weather conditions, and operating a vehicle for travel. Employees may be exposed to hazardous materials and must wear protective gear. Shift work, including weekends and holidays, is required, along with potential overtime.
