Key Responsibilities

The Principal Accountant (Innovation) will serve as the primary advisor to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), providing insights and analyses on intricate accounting, reporting, and Internal Control over Financial Reporting (ICFR) matters. The role includes developing, interpreting, and enforcing accounting policies and procedures relevant to the FHFA. The incumbent will also spearhead initiatives for process enhancement and the integration of technological advancements into the agency's accounting and financial management operations.

Core Duties

The responsibilities of the Principal Accountant (Innovation) encompass the following:
  • Oversee the creation and finalization of financial reports for the agency.
  • Advise senior management on complex issues pertaining to government accounting standards.
  • Implement new or revised regulations in the agency's accounting systems.
  • Apply accounting standards, such as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, to financial management.
  • Coordinate responses to internal and external financial audits.
  • Lead the agency's response to audit findings, including developing corrective actions.
  • Enhance internal control mechanisms to mitigate potential deficiencies.
  • Compile and review accountability reports for public dissemination.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements or automation in financial systems.
  • Support the implementation of updates to financial management systems.
  • Engage in efforts to deploy low or no-code applications for financial process improvements.
  • Evaluate financial systems for potential enhancements.
  • Recommend technological solutions for budget and finance systems.
  • Assess the applicability of new technologies to enhance financial practices.
  • Participate in the rollout of innovative financial management practices.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of agency financial processes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
