The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Compliance Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring adherence to all relevant standards and regulations related to environmental and health safety. This position is responsible for providing expert guidance and support in the development, implementation, coordination, and maintenance of a comprehensive safety program across all divisions of the University of Miami, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for healthcare, research, and educational laboratories.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Manages, with limited oversight, the relevant EHS program(s), including but not limited to Laser Safety, Biological Safety, and Hazardous Materials.
  • Assists in establishing procedures to protect employees and the surrounding community while ensuring that all facilities comply with applicable regulations.
  • Conducts thorough EHS assessments and ensures that appropriate control measures are implemented, as well as approving alternative controls when necessary.
  • Minimizes risks associated with non-compliance with regulations and policies governing the relevant EHS program(s).
  • Delivers EHS training and education to University of Miami faculty, staff, and students who may be exposed to hazardous agents.
  • Performs regular EHS audits and inspections in accordance with current regulations and guidelines, adjusting frequency as needed.
  • Investigates incidents occurring on University campuses and assists in the development and tracking of corrective action plans.
  • Participates in emergency response protocols for incidents involving hazardous materials and responds appropriately to such incidents.
  • Maintains ongoing EHS education to stay informed of developments in the relevant environmental health and safety programs.
  • Adheres to University and departmental policies and procedures, safeguarding University assets.

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Experience:

A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
  • Effective communication skills in both oral and written formats
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve a variety of issues
  • Sound judgment in making critical decisions
  • Proficiency in computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office)
DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions
  • Provide support to the University of Miami community regarding chemical safety by offering guidance, managing chemicals, and implementing practical risk control measures.
  • Assist in responding to chemical concerns or complaints, including evaluations and investigations.
  • Ensure quality and service levels in technical measurements through testing, calibration, and proper use of chemical hygiene monitoring tools and hazard control devices.
  • Support chemical safety programs such as hazard communication, exposure assessments, health monitoring, and chemical hygiene initiatives.
  • Participate in the annual laboratory inspection program.
  • Review protocols, procedures, and instructions to ensure effective risk mitigation, training, and compliance with applicable regulations across the University.
  • Maintain the safety data sheet in the digital database on the University of Miami platform.
  • Design educational materials, develop training sessions, and engage in creative initiatives to enhance safety resources.
  • Conduct safety-related training as required.
  • Participate in responses to accidents and exposures involving hazardous chemicals.
  • Obtain HAZWOPER 40 technician certification and pursue additional safety credentials as identified.
  • Engage in incident response as necessary.
  • Provide support to institutional committees, departments, and groups as needed.
  • Contribute to other EHS initiatives requiring team collaboration and participation.
  • Perform other duties related to EHS support for the University as necessary.
