Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Physicist to join our team as a Radiation Safety Expert. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe use of radiation-producing devices and radioactive materials in our medical facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including decontamination routines and radiation detection advice.
  • Review and advise on the procurement of new equipment and develop reports to initiate changes.
  • Establish and maintain radiation safety programs for x-rays, linear accelerators, and other therapy devices.
  • Develop and implement quality control, modality accreditation, and radiation safety programs for diagnostic x-rays, fluoroscopy, computed tomography, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound.
  • Monitor radiation exposure to patients and personnel exposed to radiation.
  • Maintain accurate records and correspondence with government agencies.
  • Prepare necessary documentation for registration and certification of radiation equipment.
  • Assist during x-ray inspections and serve as primary contact during governmental and accrediting body inspections.
  • Establish radiation safety programs for the use of radioactive materials.
  • Perform internal audits, testing of equipment, and contamination surveys to ensure adherence to radiation safety programs and compliance with government regulations.
  • Monitor radiation exposure to patients, personnel, and the general public.
  • Maintain accurate records and correspondence with government agencies.
  • Prepare necessary documentation for licensing of radioactive materials.
  • Assist during government inspections and serve as a member of the hospital's Radiation Safety Committee.
  • Serve as Radiation Safety Officer for State of Florida License Numbers 1319-1, 1319-3, 76-13, 3908-1, and others.
  • Establish protocols for scanning of implanted devices based on MR safe, MR conditional.
  • Contribute to clinical services by serving as MRI Safety Expert, optimizing MRI-based clinical and research imaging protocols, assisting in design and execution of MRI data collection and analysis, developing quality assurance processes, ensuring regulatory compliance and ACR accreditation, conducting equipment acceptance testing, evaluating new technologies and upgrades, providing MR physics education for resident and fellow training programs, and carrying out MRI research, including clinical trials, and collaborating with others conducting such research.
  • Provide radiation safety training to resident physicians working with radioactive materials or x-rays and to nurses working with radiation or caring for patients with radioactive materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including functioning as Acting Director of the Radiation Control Center and Radiation Safety Officer for Non-Human use in the Director's absence.
Requirements
  • Masters degree in a relevant field required; Ph.D. degree preferred.
  • Valid State of Florida License required.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience required; qualifies to be Radiation Safety Officer for Broad Scope Radioactive Materials License with GammaKnifeTM and High Dose-Rate Brachytherapy (HDR).
Preferred Certifications
  • American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Medical Physics.
  • American Board of Radiology in Radiological Physics.
  • American Board of Radiology in Medical Physics.
  • American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine – Nuclear Medicine Physics & Instrumentation.
  • American Board of Medical Physics in Magnetic Imaging Resonance Physics.
Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes
  • In-depth understanding of radiation safety in a research and medical setting.
  • Understanding of MRI physics and MR safety.
  • Ability to serve as MRI Safety Expert.
  • Proven ability to independently perform Diagnostic Medical Physics testing.
  • Qualifies as Medical Physicist under American College of Radiology criteria.
  • Ability and willingness to serve as mentor to junior Physicists, Physics Assistants, and graduate students.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Familiarity with radiation detection instruments.
  • Knowledge of units of radiation and radioactive materials.
  • Knowledge of regulations regarding the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices.
  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e., MS Suite).
  • Elementary knowledge of computer programming (i.e., MatLab, C/C++, Python, Perl).
