Job Summary:

A Biomedical Equipment Specialist at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland performs critical safety testing, preventive maintenance, repairs, and pre-acceptances on biomedical equipment and systems in a highly efficient and responsive manner to meet the needs of our customers.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide our customers with cost-effective biomedical equipment maintenance, efficient technical support, accurate clinical support, and assistance in educational needs to promote and ensure the safe and effective use of biomedical equipment in the clinical environment.

This includes, but is not limited to, electronic patient and non-patient equipment used in the patient care area, electronic equipment designed for diagnostic, therapeutic, and laboratory applications.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and continuously seek improvement in the Environment of Care, particularly in terms of patient, staff, and facility safety.
  • Develop and maintain biomedical equipment inventory and history records, coordinate equipment service inspections, and implement plans to reduce equipment failure and increase reliability, while minimizing the risk to patients and staff.
  • Provide technical support on equipment operation and maintenance for the purpose of supporting the clinical staff.
Requirements:
  • Education: High School Diploma/GED, Post High School Vocational / Military / Specialized Training as a Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) - AA degree; Bachelor's degree in Clinical /Biomedical (BME) or AAMI Certification preferred.
  • Experience: 5+ years of previous experience as a Biomedical Equipment Technician or military trained Biomedical Equipment Repair Technician.
  • Knowledge/Skills:
    • Maintain a current driver's license and meet all hospital insurance policy carriers' requirements.
    • Personal computer skills.
    • Word processing software (MS Word).
    • Spreadsheet/database software (Excel).
    • Strong English reading, verbal, written communication skills.
    • Ability to interact successfully with management, physicians, Board members, and staff.
    • Ability to work independently, problem solve, and handle multiple priorities.
    • Ability to use service manuals and schematics to maintain, calibrate, and repair a wide variety of biomedical equipment.
Physical Requirements:
  • Sit: Up to 3 hours/day.
  • Stand/Walk: 6-8 hours.
  • Bend/Stoop: Up to 6 hours.
  • Reach: Up to 6 hours.
  • Rep Use of UE/Grasp: Up to 6 hours.
  • Lift/Push/Pull: 50 lbs, over 50# with assistance or equipment.
