Job Summary

We're seeking a skilled Materials & Processes Engineer to join our team at Blue Origin. As a key member of our Engines business unit, you'll be responsible for evaluating metallic materials for usage in liquid rocket engines, ensuring forging or casting processes have sufficient controls, and interfacing with the supply base on technical issues.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate metallic materials for usage in liquid rocket engines, considering mechanical properties, thermal properties, and environmental factors.
  • Ensure forging or casting processes have sufficient controls to ensure a repeatable process.
  • Interface with the supply base on technical issues concerning raw materials, part fabrication, and new materials/processes.
  • Perform development and qualification testing for forgings or castings to ensure performance in operation.
  • Generate documentation against metallic material and process specifications to ensure adequate process control.
  • Provide technical support and disposition of nonconformances from the application of forging or casting process control requirements.
  • Support technology development efforts, such as alloy development or process optimization.
Requirements
  • B.S. degree or higher in Material Science & Engineering, with a focus on metallurgy.
  • Hands-on experience with material property testing and microstructural evaluation.
  • Familiarity with at least one of the following standard methods for testing mechanical properties of metallic materials: tensile, fatigue, fracture, creep, stress rupture.
  • Interest and ability to build expertise in forging, melting, or casting materials and processes.
  • Hands-on experience with building or implementing test equipment, jigs, etc.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Interest and ability to support both production and technology development.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with databases and data analysis techniques.
  • Experience with statistical process control and analysis.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamic modeling using CALPHAD based applications.
  • Knowledge of casting or forging process modeling software.
  • Experience with failure analysis and forensic investigations.
  • Industry experience with any of the following: forging, powder metallurgy, alloy production, heat treatment, welding, non-destructive evaluation.
