About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Materials Engineer to join our team at Blue Origin. As a key member of our space systems team, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of advanced materials and tribology solutions for our rocket engines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute test plans to assess the wear life and damage modalities of materials used in rocket engine mechanisms
  • Collaborate with component design engineers to provide tribology support and ensure the selection of suitable materials for rocket engine components
  • Conduct research and analysis to identify and mitigate lubrication and wear risks in rocket engine systems
  • Develop and implement surface engineering and residual stress treatments to improve the performance of rocket engine components
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful integration of materials and tribology solutions into our rocket engine systems
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, or related field
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in product-focused tribology, with a strong background in materials science and engineering
  • Hands-on experience developing and executing test plans, measuring and characterizing friction and wear of tribological systems
  • Fundamental understanding of material interfaces in relative motion, with experience in high vibration and/or in-space environments
  • Expertise in at least one of the following areas: vacuum-compatible dry film lubricants, tribology of metal-on-metal interfaces, vacuum- and propellant-compatible greases, surface engineering, residual stress treatments, superfinishing, coatings, and other surface modifications
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience supporting flight production programs
  • Expertise in auditing suppliers to ensure compliance with design and qualification requirements
  • Experience with characterization of wear surfaces and materials using methods such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence, fractography, debris sampling and quantification, wear particle analysis, etc.
  • Proven experience managing technology development projects, measuring technical progress, resources, and managing budgets
  • Experience with statistical analysis methods and related tools
  • Familiarity with standard methods for testing mechanical properties of metallic and soft materials
  • Experience with failure analysis and forensic investigations
