Job Overview

Position Title: Linux Systems Management Engineer

Purpose: The East Tennessee Research facility is seeking candidates for the role of Linux Systems Management Engineer within the Client Technologies Team. This role is pivotal as it serves as the primary owner of the Linux platform, ensuring optimal user satisfaction among the Linux community across the client site. The position encompasses the entire lifecycle of devices, including deployment, ongoing management, and user documentation. A profound understanding of the Linux operating system is essential, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders. As the final escalation point, this role is instrumental in shaping policy implementation and fostering stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Enhance processes related to the lifecycle of computer systems, focusing on improvements in acquisition, configuration, deployment, daily operations, maintenance, monitoring, automated support, and system retirement.
  • Provide top-tier troubleshooting assistance as required, collaborating with manufacturers, vendors, support staff, and users.
  • Develop and maintain internal operating procedures and user documentation.
  • Contribute to the management of cybersecurity risks and the implementation of supporting tools.
  • Deliver a centralized client management solution for Linux workstations and servers.
  • Create installation packages for the automated deployment of software applications and updates for desktop Linux platforms.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert during policy discussions and assist various groups with Linux management projects.
  • Act as a liaison between the Linux user community and the IT organization.
  • Maintain communication with the Linux user community through blog posts and mass emails to ensure collaboration and buy-in.
Required Qualifications:
  • Hands-on experience in the installation, configuration, and management of desktop Linux solutions, including Red Hat, CentOS (and Stream), Fedora, and Ubuntu.
  • A strong desire to stay at the forefront of Linux technologies, leveraging the latest versions and kernels to address challenges.
  • Solid understanding of configuration management in a diverse environment.
  • Proficient scripting skills (perl, python, shell, etc.).
  • Experience with installer package creation (RPM and DEB) and package scripts.
  • Practical knowledge of Linux deployment automation.
  • Familiarity with OS and application security.
  • Understanding of networking services such as DNS and DHCP.
  • Experience with task automation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required, with the ability to obtain Department of Energy security clearance preferred.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, including weekends, to resolve urgent issues or meet critical milestones.
Desired Technical Qualifications:
  • Experience with CFEngine or other Linux configuration management systems (Puppet, Ansible, Chef, etc.).
  • Familiarity with LUKS, run levels, GRUB, the init system, and components of the Linux boot process.
  • Experience with software update regression testing.
  • Knowledge of application virtualization software and methodologies.
  • Experience with SQL database queries, particularly for data analysis.
  • Web server configuration experience (Apache and Tomcat).
  • Experience with SSH and graphical network access.
  • Experience managing remote storage resources, such as Dropbox, OneDrive, SMB, and NFS.
  • Application programming skills.

Experience:
  • Experience in a scientific or technological environment is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience providing direct technical assistance to users and support staff.
  • Minimum of 5 years managing Linux systems.
