Role Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Linux Systems Engineer to play a pivotal role in our Systems Engineering division at ITR. This position is essential for supporting research initiatives by overseeing clusters, servers, workstations, and other critical services. Your primary focus will be on aiding R&D projects through the deployment, automation, monitoring, and management of Linux systems tailored for research purposes. You will benefit from a flexible work schedule and collaborate with a diverse team utilizing various communication platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate deployment, monitoring, and management of research initiatives
  • Guarantee system availability, performance, scalability, and security
  • Engage in scripting with various tools
  • Assess architecture and propose enhancements
  • Employ automation and monitoring solutions to streamline system management
  • Design, install, configure, and maintain server systems to fulfill user requirements
  • Implement ongoing process improvements
  • Provide expert advice on hardware and software selection
  • Collaborate with research teams to ensure environments meet specifications
  • Identify and document IT best practices
  • Present technical concepts to groups of scientists and engineers
  • Ensure secure operation of Linux systems
  • Troubleshoot system issues and coordinate with vendors for resolutions
  • Monitor system performance and configure software packages
  • Maintain documentation on software builds and installations
  • Support company values and foster a respectful workplace
  • Off-hours support may be necessary

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field plus 5 years of experience
  • Proficient in managing Gitlab
  • Minimum 5 years of UNIX/Linux Systems management experience
  • At least 2 years of experience with configuration management tools such as Git, Jenkins, Ansible, or Puppet
  • Fluency in scripting languages including Bash, Python, or equivalent
  • Advanced troubleshooting and system administration skills with Linux Servers
  • Experience in supporting large data systems
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with multiple operating systems
  • Experience with Centos/RHEL, Ubuntu, VMware
  • Understanding of platforms that support users with job submissions and troubleshooting
  • Experience with containerized applications in a Linux environment
  • Managing GPU/Cuda clusters for AI/ML and image processing
  • Networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, protocols, and diagnostics
  • Experience with performance and diagnostic tools
  • Knowledge of monitoring systems like Grafana, CheckMK, or Nagios
  • Familiarity with Windows and MacOS environments
  • Previous experience in technical environments
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment
