Position Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Linux Systems Engineer to contribute to our R&D initiatives at ITR. This role is pivotal within our Systems Engineering division, which is committed to facilitating research activities through the management of clusters, servers, workstations, and other vital services. As a Linux Systems Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting R&D projects by overseeing the deployment, automation, monitoring, and management of Linux systems tailored for research purposes. You will have the flexibility to work on a schedule that suits you while collaborating with a diverse team using various communication platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the deployment, monitoring, and management of research initiatives
  • Ensure systems are available, performant, scalable, and secure
  • Engage in scripting with a variety of tools
  • Assess system architecture and propose enhancements
  • Leverage automation and monitoring solutions to streamline system management
  • Design, install, configure, and maintain server systems to fulfill user requirements
  • Implement ongoing process improvements
  • Provide expert advice on hardware and software selection
  • Collaborate with research teams to ensure environments align with project needs
  • Document and identify IT best practices
  • Present technical concepts to groups of scientists and engineers
  • Guarantee the secure operation of Linux systems
  • Troubleshoot system issues and liaise with vendors for resolutions
  • Monitor system performance and configure software packages
  • Maintain thorough documentation on software installations and builds
  • Uphold company values and foster a respectful workplace
  • Be available for off-hours support as necessary

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related discipline, along with 5 years of relevant experience
  • Proficient in managing Gitlab
  • At least 5 years of experience in UNIX/Linux Systems management
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience with configuration management tools such as Git, Jenkins, Ansible, or Puppet
  • Proficient in scripting languages like Bash, Python, or equivalent
  • Advanced troubleshooting and system administration skills with Linux Servers
  • Experience in supporting large-scale data systems
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with multiple operating systems
  • Experience with CentOS/RHEL, Ubuntu, and VMware
  • Understanding of platforms that support user job submissions and troubleshooting
  • Experience with containerized applications in a Linux environment
  • Management of GPU/Cuda clusters for AI/ML and image processing
  • Networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, protocols, and diagnostics
  • Experience with performance and diagnostic tools
  • Knowledge of monitoring systems such as Grafana, CheckMK, or Nagios
  • Familiarity with Windows and MacOS environments
  • Previous experience in technical settings
  • Strong documentation capabilities
  • Ability to excel in a dynamic work environment
