Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Linux Systems Management Engineer to join our team at ITR. As a key member of our Client Technologies Team, you will be responsible for the full life cycle of Linux systems, including deployment, management, and user documentation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Streamline Processes: Improve the lifecycle of computer systems, including acquisition, configuration, deployment, daily operations, maintenance, monitoring, automated/proactive support, services, and retirement.
  • Troubleshooting: Assist with high-level troubleshooting, working with manufacturers, vendors, support staff, and customers.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain internal operating procedures and end-user documentation.
  • Cyber Security: Contribute to the overall management of cyber security risks and implementation of tools to support our mission.
  • Client Management: Provide centralized client management solutions for Linux workstations and servers.
  • Installation Packages: Create installation packages for automated deployment of software applications and updates for desktop Linux platforms.
  • Subject Matter Expert: Act as a subject matter expert for policy discussions and assist internal and external groups with Linux management-related projects.
  • Liaison: Function as a liaison between the Linux user community and the IT organization.
Requirements
  • Practical Experience: Practical experience in the installation, configuration, and management of desktop Linux solutions, including Red Hat and Ubuntu.
  • Configuration Management: Strong understanding of configuration management in a large heterogeneous environment.
  • Scripting Ability: Strong scripting ability (perl, python, shell, etc.).
  • Package Creation: Practical experience with installer package creation (RPM and DEB) and package scripts.
  • Linux Deployment Automation: Practical experience with Linux deployment automation.
  • OS and Application Security: Knowledge of OS and application security.
  • Networking Services: Knowledge of networking services such as DNS and DHCP.
  • Task Automation: Experience with task automation.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship is required, and the ability to obtain Department of Energy security clearance is preferred.
  • Extended Hours: The ability to work occasional extended and weekend hours to resolve urgent problems or meet critical milestones as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • CFEngine or Linux Configuration Management Systems: Experience with CFEngine or other Linux configuration management systems (Puppet, Ansible, Chef, etc.).
  • LUKS and Linux Boot Process: Experience with LUKS, run levels, GRUB, the init system, and other parts of the Linux boot process.
  • Software Update Regression Testing: Experience with software update regression testing.
  • Application Virtualization: Experience with application virtualization software and approaches.
  • SQL Database Queries: Experience with SQL database queries, particularly for data analysis is desired.
  • Web Server Configuration: Experience with Web Server configuration (Apache and Tomcat).
  • SSH and Graphical Network Access: Experience with SSH as well as graphical network access.
  • Remote Storage Resources: Experience with configuration and management of remote storage resources, such as Dropbox, OneDrive, SMB, and NFS.
  • Application Programming Skills: Application programming skills.
